Families of Navy SEALs killed in downed Chinook blame Obama and military brass

It was the elites-of-elites Navy SEAL Team 6 who, on May 2, 2011, broke into Osama bin Laden’s secret compound in Abbotabad, Pakistan, and assassinated the Al Qaeda leader. Team 6′s exploits greatly boosted Obama’s then-sagging ratings. The shameless POS also took personal credit for the achievement of Team 6.

Three months later, on August 6, 2011, 22 members of Navy SEAL Team 6 were among the 30 American servicemen and 8 Afghans who were killed when their Chinook helicopter (call sign Extortion 17) reportedly was shot down by Taliban rebels in Afghanistan. According to the New York Times, military officials said none of the crash victims had been on the Bin Laden mission.

This morning (May 9, 2013), the families of three SEALs (Aaron Vaughn, Michael Strange, John Faas) and a National Guardsman (Patrick Hamburger) who were killed in the Chinook crash, gave a press conference in the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. Also present were retired U.S. military officers and politicians (Michele Bachmann and Allen West).

Here’s the video of the press conference, which is nearly 3 hours long.

In this post, I will report on the first part of the press conference.

The press conference began with Larry Klayman, president of Freedom Watch and founder of the citizen watchdog group, Judicial Watch, delivering the introductory remarks. Klayman summarized the families’ grievances as follows:

  • Obama and Joe Biden improperly revealed the identities of the Navy SEALs who were on the mission to assassinate Osama bin Laden, thereby putting “a target” on the backs of the SEALs.
  • The Chinook helicopter was “inadequate,” as was its pilot.
  • When the Chinook was attacked by the Taliban, our side “couldn’t return fire” and was “handcuffed.”
  • At the funeral in Bagram Airfield in Kabul, Afghanistan, for our servicemen, Jesus’ name couldn’t be mentioned but instead an imam prayed.

Next, a video of the funeral was shown (beginning at 0:14:50):

funeral1At the 0:17:37 mark, a military chaplain wearing a black stole said: “We will begin this … [inaudible] military …[inaudible] commend the souls of the departed into your loving care. Amen.”

funeral2

The chaplain immediately is followed by an imam reciting a Muslim prayer in Arabic. His face is partially obscured in this screen shot, but you can see he’s a Middle-Easterner:

funeral4Here’s the imam’s “prayer,” which the video translated into English. Words between brackets are the video-maker’s explanatory comments on the prayer:

“Amen. I shelter in Allah from the devil who has been cast with stones. In the name of Allah the merciful forgiver. The companions of the “fire” (the sinners and infidels who are fodder for hell fire) are not equal with the companions of heaven. The companions of heaven (Muslims) are the winners. Had we sent this Koran to a mountain, you would have seen the mountain prostrated in fear of Allah (mocking the God of Moses). Such examples are what we present to the people, so that they would think (repent and convert to Islam). Blessings are to your God (Allah), the God of glory of what they describe. And peace be upon the messengers (prophets) and thanks be to Allah the lord of both universes (mankind and Jinn).”

The video ends with a photo mosaic of the servicemen who were killed in the crash, followed by still shots of the downed Chinook:

funeral6funeral7The next speaker is Billy Vaughn, the impassioned father of Navy SEAL Aaron Vaughn.

funeral8

Vaughn began by saying his son was not on the “right chopper” that fateful day, August 6, 2011, because Obama had increased the number of special op missions from a monthly average of 56 in 2009, to 186/month in 2010, to as many as 334 a month between August 2010 and July 2011, a month before his son died in the Chinook crash. A direct result of the radical increase in the number of special op missions was the scarcity of available MH-47 copters. Vaughn maintains that if his son had gone on a MH-47 that night, he would have had a better chance of surviving the fire fight.

Vaughn continues:

“But according to a 3-star [Vice] Admiral [Robert] Harward‘s statement to the grieving families that day, ‘We want to win the hearts and minds of the enemy.’ Aaron Vaughn did not become a Navy SEAL Team Six to win the hearts and minds of jihadists. He became a Navy SEAL to fight for this [American] Republic and defeat the enemy.

Any American flag officer who does not want to defeat the enemy needs to find another job. Any man who sits in that White House who does not want to defeat … ….

I have two questions: Why did they [Aaron and the other servicemen] not ride in the right chopper? Why did they not shoot down the enemy? …

The record will show that the Islamists are responsible for the deaths of the Americans. But I submit to you today that the U.S. government and many high-ranking military people own more credit for the shoot down than the Taliban. Political correctness, building the esteem of the Afghans, leveling of the playing field, and failure by the Obama Administration to name the enemy and to accurately identify the savage ideology our warriors are up against have made possible … [inaudible]. This administration apparently went to extreme efforts to make sure that the enemy Osama bin Laden had a proper burial. Our president was outraged when the Koran was burnt. But then those who die for the Republic (pointing his finger at the video screen behind him, referring to the funeral at Bagram), this is allowed to go on. To steal their First Amendment rights, to steal their religious rights, to be violated by Islam.

General [Joseph] Votel, it is sad that our troops are under your command. It is sad, General, after the imam damned our warriors, you stood and talked about how we’re one, about how we’re brothers.

Mr. Obama, President Obama, you need to step up or step down. You must step up and defend our warriors.  You must step up and show the outrage that you have shown when the religion of Islam is disrespected….

I tell you today, we have sheep and wolves in high places, and they are getting our sheepdogs killed unnecessarily. But I will also tell you today, that no plan of Hell or scheme of man can separate Aaron Vaughn from the love of God that is Jesus Christ, our Lord. Not the imam or Washington, DC.  Aaron’s God is the God of the Bible.”

Aaron_VaughnAaron C. Vaughn, Navy Chief Special Warfare Operator (SEAL), 30, left behind a wife, 2-year-old son, and a 2-month-old daughter.

If you don’t tear up at the anguished cries of Aaron Vaughn’s dad, then your heart must be as black and stony as President Lucifer’s — assuming he actually has one.

Letter from a U.S. Marine in Afghanistan

4th-recon-marine

Pic of an unnamed 4th Recon Marine

I received this essay, written by a Recon U.S. Marine in Afghanistan, as an email from FOTM reader Ken L.

I can’t vouch for the authenticity of the essay but, not only is it well- and colorfully-written, the essay has the ring of truth.

FORECONA “Recon Marine” is a member of the United States Marine Corps Force Reconnaissance (FORECON), a special operations “capable” force (SOC) that provides essential elements of military intelligence to the command element of the Marine Air-Ground Task Force.

~Eowyn

Hindu KushThe Hindu Kush is a 500-mi long mountain range that stretches between central Afghanistan and northern Pakistan.

From a Recon Marine in Afghanistan

From the Sand Pit. It’s freezing here. I’m sitting on hard cold dirt between rocks and shrubs at the base of the Hindu Kush Mountains, along the Dar’yoi Pomir River, watching a hole that leads to a tunnel that leads to a cave. Stake out, my friend, and no pizza delivery for thousands of miles.

I also glance at the area around my ass every ten to fifteen seconds to avoid another scorpion sting. I’ve actually given up battling the chiggers and sand fleas, but the scorpions give a jolt like a cattle prod. Hurts like a bastard. The antidote tastes like transmission fluid, but God bless the Marine Corps for the five vials of it in my pack.

The one truth the Taliban cannot escape is that, believe it or not, they are human beings, which means they have to eat food and drink water. That requires couriers and that’s where an old bounty hunter like me comes in handy. I track the couriers, locate the tunnel entrances and storage facilities, type the info into the handheld, shoot the coordinates up to the satellite link that tells the air commanders where to drop the hardware. We bash some heads for a while, then I track and record the new movement.

It’s all about intelligence. We haven’t even brought in the snipers yet. These scurrying rats have no idea what they’re in for. We are but days away from cutting off supply lines and allowing the eradication to begin. But you know me, I’m a romantic. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: This country blows, man. It’s not even a country. There are no roads, there’s no infrastructure, there’s no government. This is an inhospitable, rock pit shit hole ruled by eleventh century warring tribes. There are no jobs here like we know jobs.

Afghanistan offers two ways for a man to support his family: join the opium trade or join the army. That’s it. Those are your options. Oh, I forgot, you can also live in a refugee camp and eat plum-sweetened, crushed beetle paste and squirt mud like a goose with stomach flu, if that’s your idea of a party. But the smell alone of those ‘tent cities of the walking dead’ is enough to hurl you into the poppy fields to cheerfully scrape bulbs for eighteen hours a day.

I’ve been living with these Tajiks and Uzbeks, and Turkmen and even a couple of Pushtuns, for over a month-and-a-half now, and this much I can say for sure: These guys, all of ‘em, are Huns…actual, living Huns.. They LIVE to fight. It’s what they do. It’s ALL they do. They have no respect for anything, not for their families, nor for each other, nor for themselves. They claw at one another as a way of life. They play polo with dead calves and force their five-year-old sons into human cockfights to defend the family honor. Huns, roaming packs of savage, heartless beasts who feed on each other’s barbarism. Cavemen with AK-47′s. Then again, maybe I’m just cranky.

I’m freezing my ass off on this stupid hill because my lap warmer is running out of juice, and I can’t recharge it until the sun comes up in a few hours. Oh yeah! You like to write letters, right? Do me a favor, Bizarre. Write a letter to CNN and tell Wolf and Anderson and that awful, sneering, pompous Aaron Brown to stop calling the Taliban ‘smart.’ They are not smart. I suggest CNN invest in a dictionary because the word they are looking for is ‘cunning.’ The Taliban are cunning, like jackals and hyenas and wolverines. They are sneaky and ruthless, and when confronted, cowardly. They are hateful, malevolent parasites who create nothing and destroy everything else. Smart. Pfft. Yeah, they’re real smart.

They’ve spent their entire lives reading only one book (and not a very good one, as books go) and consider hygiene and indoor plumbing to be products of the devil. They’re still figuring out how to work a Bic lighter. Talking to a Taliban warrior about improving his quality of life is like trying to teach an ape how to hold a pen; eventually he just gets frustrated and sticks you in the eye with it. OK, enough. Snuffle will be up soon, so I have to get back to my hole. Covering my tracks in the snow takes a lot of practice, but I’m good at it.

Please, I tell you and my fellow Americans to turn off the TV sets and move on with your lives. The story line you are getting from CNN and other news agencies is utter bullshit and designed not to deliver truth but rather to keep you glued to the screen through the commercials. We’ve got this one under control The worst thing you guys can do right now is sit around analyzing what we’re doing over here, because you have no idea what we’re doing, and really, you don’t want to know. We are your military, and we are doing what you sent us here to do.

How are you spending Christmas Eve day?

You are most likely spending time with family and friends, or maybe doing some last-minute shopping.

Our soldiers serving in the sand box do not get a day off. They are under constant danger in fighting the Taliban. The video below shows U.S. Soldiers coming under fire from Taliban fighters and reacting with an immediate hail of suppressing fire to keep the enemies’ heads down. Once the firefight is won and the enemy breaks contact, the team does a break down of remaining ammo and supplies.

This footage is part of an ongoing documentary of the war in Afghanistan through raw combat footage.

Prayers for all our soldiers serving abroad during Christmas.

New U.S. Army manual forbids our soldiers from criticizing Islam

The evidence is mounting that the Obama regime at best coddles radical Muslims, at worst it’s actively supporting and arming them. To wit:

  • The Obama regime refuses to call US Army psychologist Nidal Hasan, who perpetrated the worst shooting ever to take place on a U.S. military base, at Fort Hood on November 5, 2009 — an Islamic jihadist. Despite eyewitness testimonies that Hasan had shouted “Allahu Akbar! (Allah is Great!)” before opening fire, killing 13 and wounding another 29; and regardless of internal Army reports indicating Hasan’s fellow officers had reported his outspoken sympathy with radical Islam since 2005.
  • In August 2011, afraid of offending the delicate sensibilities of Muslims, the U.S. Marine Corps banned Marines serving in Afghanistan from — I kid you not — audible farting.
  • In Sept. 2012, a highly-decorated 18-year veteran Army officer, Lt. Col. Matthew Dooley, was fired from teaching a course on Islam because he had the temerity of actually teaching “negative aspects” the truth about Islam. (More evidence at the end of this post.)

The latest is a new U.S. Army handbook for troops deployed to the Middle East, forbidding our soldiers from making derogatory comments about the extremist Taliban, pedophilia, or Islam in general, as well as any comment approving of rights for women.

Aren’t we fighting the Taliban in Afghanistan? So if the Obama regime were in power then, U.S. soldiers in the Second World War would have been barred from making “derogatory comments” about Hitler and the Nazis.

What lunacy.

1

The non-partisan public interest organization Judicial Watch reports Dec. 11, 2012:

Here is a strong indicator that the Obama Administration’s crusade to appease Islam has gone too far; a new U.S. military handbook for troops deployed to the Middle East orders soldiers not to make derogatory comments about the Taliban or criticize pedophilia, among other outrageous things.

It gets better; the new manual, which is around 75 pages, suggests that Western ignorance of Afghan culture— not Taliban infiltration—is responsible for the increase in deadly attacks by Afghan soldiers against the coalition forces.

The soon-to-be-released Army handbook is still being drafted, but [The Wall St. Journal] … got a sneak preview and published an article [for subscribers only] that should infuriate the American taxpayers funding the never-ending war on terror. The manual is being created because someone with authority bought the theory that cultural insensitivity is driving insider attacks on U.S. troops in Afghanistan.

More than three dozen insider attacks have killed 63 members of the U.S.-led coalition this year, according to the article, and some blame “American cultural ignorance.” The bottom line is that troops may experience social-cultural shock and/or discomfort when interacting with Afghan security forces, the new military handbook says. “Better situational awareness/understanding of Afghan culture will help better prepare [troops] to more effectively partner and to avoid cultural conflict that can lead toward green-on-blue violence.”

The draft leaked to the newspaper offers a list of “taboo conversation topics” that soldiers should avoid, including “making derogatory comments about the Taliban,” “advocating women’s rights,” “any criticism of pedophilia,” “directing any criticism towards Afghans,” “mentioning homosexuality and homosexual conduct” or “anything related to Islam.”

At least one high-ranking military official had the backbone to publicly criticize the new manual, albeit through a spokesperson. U.S. Marine General John Allen, the top commander in Afghanistan, doesn’t endorse it and rejected a proposed forward drafted by Army officials in his name. “He does not approve of its contents,” according to a military spokesman quoted in the story.

Earlier this year the Obama Administration changed the way federal agents are trained to combat terrorism and violent extremism by eliminating all materials that shed a negative light on Muslims. Under White House orders, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) destroyed instructional material that characterizes Muslims as prone to violence or terrorism in a government-wide call to end Islamophobia.

Under Obama practically every major federal agency has been ordered to participate in Muslim outreach initiatives, including the Justice Department with a special program to protect Islamic civil rights, Homeland Security meetings with extremist Muslim organizations and the nation’s space agency (NASA) with an unprecedented mission to focus on Muslim diplomacy.

Additionally, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton signed a special order to allow the reentry of two radical Islamic academics whose terrorist ties long banned them from the U.S. and the administration sent an America-bashing mosque leader (Feisal Abdul Rauf) who blames U.S. foreign policy for the 9/11 attacks on a Middle Eastern outreach mission. The Obama Administration even ordered a government-funded meal program for home-bound seniors to offer halal cuisine prepared according to Islamic law.

About U.S. Marine General John Allen who has refused to endorse the new Muslim-appeasing military manual: This is the same Gen. Allen whose previously-announced promotion is now indefinitely postponed, and who will soon be replaced by Gen. Joseph Dunford as commander of U.S. forces in Afghanistan. Fart, the new Weapon of Mass Destruction

This is a follow-up of yesterday’s post, “U.S. Marines banned from farting in Afghanistan.”

After he read the article, FOTM’s resourceful reader/commenter GrouchyFogie unearthed this piece of valuable information from the misty recesses of history.

During the last stage of feudal Japan, the Tokugawa or Edo Period (1603-1867), the ruling shogun regime tried to keep foreigners from the West away. But Japan, being pre-industrial, was at a military disadvantage. So some Japanese resorted to magical thinking and imagined that flatulence might be deployed in “He-Gassen (屁合戦)” or “fart wars” to literally blow away the enemy.

An unknown artist (or is it an artist who preferred to remain unknown?) immortalized the He-gassen plans in a scroll. Here are some scenes from the scroll.

WARNING: Eye bleach alert! (Hint: It helps if you think of the nudity and farting as art. LOL)

So, instead of being politically-correct wusses, the eunuchs in the U.S. Marine Corps who issued the fart ban can take a chapter from Tokugawa Japan by making strategic use of our Marines’ “wind” to blow away those Taliban muzzies.

Let them rip! LOL

“Religion of Peace” strikes again…

Afghan schoolgirls poisoned in anti-education attack

Reuters: About 150 Afghan schoolgirls were poisoned on Tuesday after drinking contaminated water at a high school in the country’s north, officials said, blaming it on conservative radicals opposed to female education.

Since the 2001 toppling of the Taliban, which banned education for women and girls, females have returned to schools, especially in Kabul.

But periodic attacks still occur against girls, teachers and their school buildings, usually in the more conservative south and east of the country, from where the Taliban insurgency draws most support.

“We are 100 percent sure that the water they drunk inside their classes was poisoned. This is either the work of those who are against girls’ education or irresponsible armed individuals,” said Jan Mohammad Nabizada, a spokesman for education department in northern Takhar province.

Some of the 150 girls, who suffered from headaches and vomiting, were in critical condition, while others were able to go home after treatment in hospital, the officials said.

They said they knew the water had been poisoned because a larger tank used to fill the affected water jugs was not contaminated.  “This is not a natural illness. It’s an intentional act to poison schoolgirls,” said Haffizullah Safi, head of Takhar’s public health department.

None of the officials blamed any particular group for the attack, fearing retribution from anyone named.

The Afghan government said last year that the Taliban, which has been trying to adopt a more moderate face to advance exploratory peace talks, had dropped its opposition to female education.  But the insurgency has never stated that explicitly and in the past acid has been thrown in the faces of women and girls by hardline Islamists while walking to school.

Education for women was outlawed by the Taliban government from 1996-2001 as un-Islamic.

U.S. Army sergeant runs amuck in Afghan killing spree

You can’t escape this. It’s all over the news.

A U.S. Army sergeant in Afghanistan went berserk and murdered 16 civilians, including 9 children with single gunshot wounds to the head.

The New York Times reports, March 11, 2012:

Stalking from home to home, a United States Army sergeant methodically killed at least 16 civilians, 9 of them children, in a rural stretch of southern Afghanistan early on Sunday, igniting fears of a new wave of anti-American hostility, Afghan and American officials said.

Residents of three villages in the Panjwai district of Kandahar Province described a terrifying string of attacks in which the soldier, who had walked more than a mile from his base, tried door after door, eventually breaking in to kill within three separate houses. The man gathered 11 bodies, including those of 4 girls younger than 6, and set fire to them, villagers said.[...]

The officials said the suspect was an Army staff sergeant who acted alone and then surrendered. “The initial reporting that we have at this time indicates there was one shooter, and we have one man in custody,” said Lt. Col. Jimmie Cummings, a NATO spokesman.

A senior American military official said Sunday evening that the sergeant was attached to a unit based at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, a major Army and Air Force installation near Tacoma, Wash., and that he had been part of what is called a village stabilization operation in Afghanistan. In those operations, teams of Green Berets, supported by other soldiers, try to develop close ties with village elders, organize local police units and track down Taliban leaders. The official said the sergeant was not a Green Beret himself.

Another senior military official said the sergeant was 38 and married with two children. He had served three tours of duty in Iraq, this official said, and had been deployed to Afghanistan for the first time in December. Yet another military official said he has served in the Army for 11 years.

Read the rest of the article here.

This berserk Army sergeant is symptomatic of something having gone very wrong in the military and with our foreign policy.

More than a month ago, an Army whistleblower had sounded the alarm that everything we’ve been told about the Afghan war is a lie — we’re losing the war in Afghanistan, which has become the longest U.S. war.

Our military is stretched thin, its budget and health benefits being hacked by the Obama administration. Our soldiers are weary from repeated deployments, and suffering record high rates of PTSD, alcohol abuse, and suicides.

But three POS senators are already beating the war drums for yet another war –against Iran….

Enough!!!!

U.S. out of Afghanistan!

Bring our troops home.

The Afghan 6. Screw Afghanistan

Posted by Judson Phillips on March 3, 2012 at 8:37am

~Steve~                                       H/T  Tea Party Nation.
http://www.teapartynation.com/forum/topics/screw-afghanistan

—————————————————————————————————-
Afghanistan is about to claim six more casualties. These people will not be killed but will be hurt as a result of the idiocy of the Obama Regime. They are the Koran Six.
Who are the Koran Six and why are the important? And why the hell are we still screwing around with Afghanistan?
The Koran Six are the five American military personnel and the one Afghan American interpreter who have been targeted by the so-called investigation into the Koran burnings in Afghanistan.
They will be set for disciplinary action so that we can try to calm the savages that pass for citizens in Afghanistan.
It is time to stand up and say screw Afghanistan.
For ten years, we have been there. We have been trying nation building for the last six or seven. We are propping up the regime of a lunatic, who is singularly incapable of operating a commode, much less a nation. The ingrate has repeatedly said his sympathies lie with the Islamists who want to kill him, rather than Americans who want to protect him.
Screw him and his hellhole of a country.
We are spending billions of dollars on that waste of a nation.
Why?
We send aid to them and if the Afghans see that the aid is coming from America, they burn it.
Screw them.
I’m tired of American blood being spilled for savages who live in the 7th century. I’m tired of American money being sent over to help people who hate us. I am tired of our money going to support a corrupt regime who spits on us every chance we get. I am tired of America’s sons and daughters being put in the position of having to trust the knuckle dragging Afghans, who are just as likely to turn and shoot them rather than help them.
Afghanistan is a phenomenal waste.
We have a President in this country who wants us to lose and who is doing everything possible to make certain we lose in Afghanistan. His only concern is making certain he is not blamed for it.
Screw him too.
I have a simple suggestion for the next President.
Our reason for going into Afghanistan was to keep it from being a terrorist playground. We need to deny Afghanistan to the terrorists and we need it as a base of operations to pressure both Pakistan and Iran.
Let’s put our people into their bases and just inform the Afghans that it is open season on the Taliban. We are going to kill them wherever we find them. If an Afghan village helps the Taliban, then an airstrike will wipe it off the map and we don’t care. Let’s send in loads of napalm and pesticide and wipe out their opium production so the Taliban lose their cash crop.
Forget this playing nice with them. If their Korans get burned, well that is just too bad. If they want to attack American bases because of that, we have guns, a lot of ammunition and people who know how to use them.
No more American lives should be lost, nor more American blood shed, nor treasure expended to try to remake that open sewer that we call Afghanistan. Our purpose there is only to protect America from terrorists who want to bring death and destruction to America’s shores.
While Barack Obama parties with his radical buddies in Washington and takes vacations every other week at taxpayer expense, the Koran Six have risked their lives in Afghanistan and will be sacrificed because some Korans got burned.
They do not deserve to be punished. They deserve medals.

Animals riot as war manual burned. Now for my opinion.

Let us get the hell out of this poop hole. Bring everyone of our troops home.

Enjoy the Taliban. Oh before we leave since our Troops are in Danger at their base bring in some nice Helicopters for some sight seeing and might as well check the weapon systems while there. Light em up. Eff their koran/war manual.

Our guys can’t have Bibles, screw you. JMHO, not endorsed by FOTM

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP)Afghan police have shot and killed three protesters in two separate incidents in the north and south of the country where riots broke out during demonstrations over this week’s Quran burnings incident.

The police say one protester was fatally shot and four people were wounded, including two police officers, when security forces and some protesters exchanged gunfire during a riot on Thursday outside the police headquarters in the northern province of Baghlan.

Police say another two protesters were killed and six were wounded in another exchange of gunfire during a protest in southern Uruzgan province.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP’s earlier story is below.

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — NATO says a man wearing an Afghan army uniform has turned his weapon on coalition troops, killing two service members.

NATO says the incident occurred on Thursday in eastern Afghanistan. No other details were disclosed.

The shooting is the latest in a rising number of attacks on NATO troops by Afghan police and soldiers or militants dressed in their uniforms.

The attacks have raised questions about the vetting of Afghan recruits and has heightened tension between foreign troops and their Afghan partners.

Last month, France suspended its training program and threatened to withdraw its forces from Afghanistan

a year ahead of schedule after an Afghan soldier shot and killed four French soldiers on a base in the east.

LEAD: Wife killed by Afghan militiaman for giving birth to a girl

Kunduz, Afghanistan – An Afghan woman was choked to death by her husband – a local militiaman – and mother-in-law for delivering a baby girl for the third time in northern Afghanistan, officials said Monday.

‘Storay, a 30-year-old mother of three, was choked to death by her husband and her mother-in-law in a remote village in Khanabad district of Kunduz province,’ police spokesman Sayed Sarwar Hussaini told dpa.

Khanabad district governor Sofi Habib said that Sher Mohammad, the husband of the deceased woman who was killed, is an active member of a pro-government local militia group with around 20 to 30 armed gunmen in the district.

‘She was told by her husband that if she delivered another baby girl, he would kill her,’ police official Hussaini said.

The woman gave birth to the third girl three months ago.

‘We have arrested Storay’s mother-in-law and we are looking for her husband, too, who is on the run,’ Hussaini said.

Afghan government with the support of the international troops has armed villagers in many far-flung areas with weapons to fight the Taliban in their own neighbourhood since two years.

The initiative has been widely criticized by rights activists for the violation of human rights by the local militiamen who are often accused of extorting money, raping women and killing their rivals.

Last Novemeber, similar gunmen threw acid on the face of three girls and their parents in the same Kunduz province after the family rejected the proposal by a local militia leader to marry the eldest daughter.

Last month, a teenage girl was rescued by police in the neighbouring province of Baghlan after her in-laws tortured and kept her in a toilet for six months because she refused to prostitute herself.

Rights activists have constantly raised concerns over the treatment of women in Afghan society.

A United Nations report in 2010 said nearly one-third of all Afghan women are exposed to some level of physical and psychological violence and an estimated 25 per cent suffer sexual abuse.

And these are the people our soldiers are fighting and dying for?
