Columbia U. prof who pled guilty to incest compares it to same-sex marriage

Don’t say we at FOTM hadn’t warned you about the slippery slope.

On December 13, 2010, I did a post about David Epstein, now 48 or 49, a “popular” Columbia University political science professor who was charged with a felony count of incest with his daughter. Sources said the daughter was over 18 when the “consensual relationship” began in 2006 and that the two often exchanged twisted text messages. Epstein faced up to four years behind bars if convicted.

David Epstein. Can you imagine having sex with this dweeb? Ewww

At the time, blogger TheOtherMcCain identified Epstein as a Huffington Post blogger, Palin hater, and Obama supporter. In other words, Epstein fits the whole shebang of the Leftist pervert profile.

Thanks to Doug Giles of Clash Daily, who just discovered this news, I’m alerted to Epstein’s oh-so-predictable defense. Giles cited an article from Daily Mail of October 8, 2012, which quotes Epstein’s lawyer Matthew Galluzzo saying this to ABCNews.com:

“Academically, we are obviously all morally opposed to incest and rightfully so. At the same time, there is an argument to be made in the Swiss case to let go what goes on privately in bedrooms. It’s ok for homosexuals to do whatever they want in their own home. How is this so different? We have to figure out why some behaviour is tolerated and some is not.”

Jackie Carrero and Mikey Zhong of the Columbia Spectator note that David Epstein is still employed as a political science professor at Columbia University, even after he copped a guilty plea (to the misdemeanor of “attempted incest”).

Florida Atlantic U. punishes student who exposed “stomp on Jesus” assignment

Just two days ago, I did a follow-up on Trail Dust’s post about an instructor at Florida Atlantic University (FAU), Deandre J. Poole, who did a class assignment that required his students to write the name “Jesus” on a sheet of paper and then stomp on the paper.

Poole just happens also to be a local Democrat Party official — vice chair of the Palm Beach County Democratic Party. The same Democratic Party the majority of whose delegates to last summer’s Democratic National Convention, in three successive voice votes, said no to including the word “God” in the party platform.

The anti-Christian outrage came to light only as a result of information provided by student Ryan Rotela, who had refused to participate in the class assignment and was punished by being suspended from the class.

Although the university at first had defended the class assignment, last Friday night (March 22), the university administration issued an apology: “We sincerely apologize for any offense this has caused. Florida Atlantic University respects all religions and welcomes people of all faiths, backgrounds and beliefs.” Blah, blah, blah.

In the same statement of apology, FAU also states: “no student has been expelled, suspended or disciplined by the university as a result of any activity that took place during this class.”

Now comes news that shows not only is the university not sorry, they also lied in their statement because Rotela has been brought up on academic charges by the school and may no longer attend class, according to documents obtained by Fox News.

From Doug Giles of Clash Daily, March 25, 2013:

According to a letter written by Associate Dean Rozalia Williams, Rotela is facing a litany of charges – including an alleged violation of the student code of conduct, acts of verbal, written or physical abuse, threats, intimidation, harassment, coercion or other conduct which threaten the health, safety or welfare of any person.”

“In the interim, you may not attend class or contact any of the students involved in this matter – verbally or electronically – or by any other means,” Williams wrote to Rotela. “Please be advised that a Student Affairs hold may be placed on your records until final disposition of the complaint.”

Hiram Sasser, director of litigation at the Liberty Institute, told Fox News the university’s behavior is “outlandish” and called their press release “inaccurate.”

“We believe the university punished him in retaliation for him exposing the class assignment to the public,” Sasser said. “Sadly, it is a testimony to the indoctrination that some of the public schools and universities are engaging in – to demonize anything that was valuable in the culture.”

The Liberty Institute wants Rotela reinstated with full credit for the course – along with an apology.

UPDATE (March 27):

Florida Governor Rick Scott is calling on the state university system chancellor to investigate the class assignment. “As we enter the week memorializing the events of Christ’s passion, this incident gave me great concern over the lessons we are teaching our students,” Scott wrote in the letter to Chancellor Frank Brogan. “The professor’s lesson was offensive, and even intolerant, to Christians and those of all faiths who deserve to be respected as Americans entitled to religious freedom.”

Meanwhile, after student Ryan Rotela retained the legal services of the Liberty Institute, the university had a change of heart – profusely apologizing — again — and promising to clear his record. (Read more, here)
