‘There’s no cheating’: How two couples with open marriages who swap lovers with their friends say relationships are built on trust and love

Daily Mail:  It’s hard enough making time for your partner on top of trying to keep in touch with friends.  But for a group of eight pals in Massachusetts, four of whom are married, the challenge is made easier by the fact they are all sleeping with each other.

Not only that but the extra-marital relationships and boyfriend and girlfriend swapping between the eight are not, as some may imagine, fleeting dalliances but rather long-term, trust-based partnerships.

Sierra Black, 33, from Somerville, Massachusetts, is married to university research scientist Martin, 47 who preferred to go by his first name for ABC’s new show 20/20 in which their bizarre story features.  The couple, who have been married for almost nine years have two young daughters: Rio, seven, and a four-year-old whose name is not specified.  For all intents and purposes they would seem like a happy, traditional family unit, but traditional they certainly are not.

When Sierra is not playing wife and mother, she can be found with either her boyfriend Aaron, or one of girlfriends, Romy or Molly.  David also enjoys a bit of fun on the side with his girlfriend J, who asked not to be named in the episode that will be aired tonight on ABC.

Martin....father, husband, adulterer

But neither David nor Sierra see anything deceitful about this arrangement which is entirely out in the open and accepted.  ‘There’s no cheating‘ Martin insists, but the relationships are yet more complicated.

Molly, Sierra’s 35-year-old girlfriend, and her husband David, 43, are the other married couple in the clique who aside from their 12 year marriage also enjoy sexual relationships with their friends.

David has been seeing J for three years, while Molly has been intimate with her lover Mark for five.

Molly explains the benefits saying: ‘I get a lot back from this. I have a tremendous amount of love and support in my life, and that is because I have all these strong relationships.’

So much sexual mingling may sound somewhat sordid and dishonest on the surface but Sierra assures naysayers: ‘We are committed to being an open book with each other, and it’s all based on a really high degree of love and trust.’

Dr. Elisabeth Sheff, a former sociology professor at Georgia State University who has studied people in open relationships for 15 years is quick to sing the praises of such an arrangement.

‘They have a very specialized ethical code,’ she said of the group. ‘There’s a real ethical basis by which they manage their relationships. In the end they may even be more egalitarian and kinder than those in monogamous relationships…which are often on auto-pilot.’

‘We are committed to being an open book with each other, and it’s all based on a really high degree of love and trust.’

It is estimated that about half a million people in America are in open relationships and any lack of clarity on numbers is due only to their disinterest in marriage.

Though most would raise both eyebrows at the idea that such a situation like Sierra and Martin’s could be good for their children, for their part Rio and her sister seem unfazed by their parents’ game of musical beds.  When asked if she thought her family might be a little odd, their daughter Rio answered: ‘Not really.’

Clinical psychologist Esther Perel explained to ABC: ‘[Parents in open marriages] don’t have orgies in front of their children. … [Y]ou’re not giving a message to your children of a romp.  ‘You’re giving the message to your children that this is an important dimension of life and that you take it seriously and that you negotiate it with care, with responsibility, and with respect.‘

Sierra agrees: ‘My kids have every advantage that they would have if Martin and I were monogamously married. They have a stable, loving home. … [They have] this wonderful community around them of people who are really just supporting each other.’

And just because their parents chose to live this way, doesn’t mean their offspring are conditioned to do the same.  Dr. Sheff expanded: ‘Some will certainly choose open relationships because it’s happening right before them. But for some it’s a pain in the ass.  ‘Because, really, relationships with one person is so much easier.’

“Specialized ethical code”?  Sounds more like justification for committing adultery.

It’s Over for Cain

The headline on Drudge this morning says it’s ” All But Over” for Herman Cain’s campaign to be the GOP presidential nominee.

I agree.

Yesterday, though still denying Kimberly White’s claim of a 13-year affair, Cain did admit that he’s repeatedly given money to White to help her “with month-to-month bills and expenses” without the knowledge of his wife of 42 years, Gloria.

How many married women among FotM’s readership think this is okay? I’d be really really upset if my husband were to do that — give our money, repeatedly, to another person, much less a female, without my knowledge or consent.

Even Cain’s denial of the affair is not believable. ABC’s George Stephanopoulos interviewed Kimberly White on “Good Morning America,” November 30, 2011. This is from the transcript of the interview:

WHITE: Well, to begin, our relationship was on and off for the last 13, 14 years. This was not a consistent love affair that went on every day for the last 14 years. So, he is correct when he made that statement. And as far as I can tell, or what I’m hearing, that is the only thing he has been correct in saying.

STEPHANOPOULOS:  He also says he has helped you- Excuse me. He also said he has helped you financially over the past few years. Has he given you money?

WHITE: Yes, he has.

STEPHANOPOULOS: On what occasions?

WHITE: I’ve received gifts and money for the last two and a half years consistently.

STEPHANOPOULOS: Did he ask for anything in return for that money?

WHITE: No. This was nothing- this was not sex for cash.

STEPHANOPOULOS: One thing I’m struck by is that you’ve also shown phone records showing at least 61 phone calls over the last several months. Even after the physical relationship ended. And, and, and most strikingly, you just gave us earlier this morning, phone records from October and November, showing multiple texts, back and forth, between cain, just as these other stories about sexual harassment allegations are breaking in the press. He seems to be calling you in late October, on November 2nd. November 3rd. November 4th. November 5th, November 7th. November 8th, 13th, 14th and 18th. He’s texting you all month long, all this month!

WHITE: That’s correct. Our communication has, you know, just up until last week, when, you know, the leak- several leaks and media- the media was- they were calling my cell phone. They were calling family members. And just up until last week, that was my last contact with Mr. Cain. And you know, the thing is, I can’t imagine waking up one morning and deciding to come out with this, if this was not true. This has been a very difficult situation for myself, for my family. And it’s nothing that I am proud of. The truth of the matter is-

STEPHANOPOULOS: Go ahead.

WHITE: The truth of the matter is, when I entered into this inappropriate relationship with Mr. Cain, I was single. I was not married. Mr. Cain has been married throughout the entire relationship. And, you know, it’s unfortunate. As far as any proof, which has- you know, I was watching several media shows just last night. When you enter into a private relationship that you really do not care to share with the public, you really don’t enter into something like that holding on to receipts. Holding on to gifts or if there were any notes or anything like that, to come out eventually and say, “Yeah, this is what happened and here is my proof.” That’s absolutely something that –

STEPHANOPOULOS: What was the relationship, exactly? Was it an affair? Was it fun? Was it just sex? Tell us about it.

WHITE: It was a very casual affair. Am I proud to admit to that? No, I’m not. It was a very casual affair that Herman flew me to- on several trips. I went on several trips with Herman. We- one particular trip was the Mike Tyson/Holyfield fight in Las Vegas. You know. I can’t make this stuff up. And frankly speaking, I wouldn’t want to make this up.

What You Should Know About Newt Gingrich

In the shock poll of the day, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich has pulled into a statistical tie with Mitt Romney in the former Massachusetts governor’s backyard, New Hampshire.

Jonathan Weisman of the Wall St. Journal reports, Nov. 18, 2011, that the poll of likely Republican primary voters by Magellan Strategies for the online New Hampshire Journal shows Romney with 29% support, Gingrich 27%, Ron Paul 16%, and Herman Cain at 10%.

This is the same Newt Gingrich whose campaign was falling apart in June, because of the mass resignations of his senior staff.

While Newt is undoubtedly knowledgeable and articulate, I find him worrisome for a number of reasons:

1. Newt Gingrich is not a conservative

2. Newt Gingrich is a New World Order man, part of the Council on Foreign Relations/occultic Bohemian Grove/Freemasonry power nexus.

But he denies he’s one.

In February 2010, at a speech Newt was giving before Claremont Colleges in Southern California, he was directly asked by Martin Hill (of the LA County Libertarian Examiner) about his involvement in those organizations. Here’s Hill’s account:

“Near the end of questioning, a young woman asked Newt about a quote attributed to him in which he had stated that he ‘is not a citizen of the world‘.

He replied emphatically by stating that, although his words were controversial among some in his office, our rights as Americans come from a Creator and that ‘there is no world government’. This view, though correct, is odd and seemingly disingenuous coming from Gingrich, an admitted member of the Council on Foreign Relations, a group whose known goal is the establishment of a world government. [...]

At the end of the event after approximately one hundred people had lined up for a book signing, Gingrich’s previous remarks regarding world government served as a perfect transition for questions about the “new world order”. After he signed the program at my request with the words “To Martin: No World Government - Your Friend, Newt”, I took the rare opportunity to question an off-guard Gingrich [...]:

Q. “You were asked about world government and you said ‘there is no world government’. What is your role in groups like the bohemian club, freemasonry, and that sort of thing, Council on Foreign Relations?

Gingrich: “I don’t belong to the Bohemian Club, I have no role in freemasonry. And my primary activity in Council on Foreign Relations was on figuring out how to fight terrorism”

Q. “So you don’t think there’s gonna be a ‘new world order’ so to speak?”

Gingrich: “No. No” [...]

Gingrich, who became visibly defensive and blinked rapidly while replying to the questions, started to walk away during my questioning with the aide of the small entourage of faculty and assistants who accompanied him.

Despite Newt’s denial, Martin Hill notes that Gingrich appears in the official “Annals of the Bohemian Club”, and was featured in a National Review column written by William F. Buckley, Jr., dated September 11, 1995, entitled “Newt draws fire- Newt Gingrich and the Bohemian Grove“.

3. Newt Gingrich’s immoral personal conduct

He has a history of adulterous behavior.

Gingrich had an adulterous affair with Marianne Ginther, while he was married to wife no. 1, Jackie Battley. After he divorced Battley, Newt married Marianne.

In the mid-1990s, while he was Speaker of the House, Newt had an adulterous affair with a 23-years-younger House of Representatives stafer named Callista Bisek. In 2000, Newt married Callista shortly after divorcing Marianne who claimed that she was in her hospital bed recovering from surgery when Newt said he wanted a divorce. [Source: wiki]

I do not believe, as liberals so facilely do, in the wall of separation of the personal from the public. In whatever domain, we are who we are — the same person. I believe that a man (or woman) who betrays his marital vows will also betray his other commitments — to friends, colleagues, political party, fellow citizens, and country.

Is that You, Monica?

In 1995, a 49-year-old married man and a 22-year-old single woman began a sexual affair in the most powerful room in the world.

The affair was tawdry, involving fellatio, cigar-penetration, anal sex (a little-publicized and little-known fact that is gleaned only if you’ve read the entirety of the Ken Starr Report because that little detail is buried in a footnote), but no vaginal intercourse. You see, the man, being trained in legalistic language-parsing and a narcissist to boot, is skilled in self- and other-deception, rationalizing that the absence of vaginal intercourse meant there was no “sex”.

16 years later, now a silver-maned 65-year-old, the man is still married, his reputation completely recovered, and is lionized as an elder statesman and globe-trotting speaker. He is active in public life, giving speeches, fundraising, and founding charitable organizations, and has spoken at the last six Democratic National Conventions.

The young woman in that scandal of so many years ago never married or even had a long-term love relationship, is now middle-aged and socially shunned.

The man, of course, is former President Bill Clinton, and the woman is Monica Lewinsky.

Sarah Cordes reports, Sept. 9, 2011, for the National Enquirer — the tabloid that was nominated for a Pulitzer because it alone uncovered former Democrat senator and VP candidate John Edwards’ adultery and “love child” — that Lewinsky is living the sad, lonely life of a near-recluse as she struggles to make ends meet, bouncing from New York to Los Ange­les, crashing with family and desperately trying to live down her scandalous past.

An “insider” told the Enquirer, “Monica’s self-esteem is at an all-time low. She’s given up her own place, and her handbag line crashed. Now she drifts between the two coasts and toys with ‘projects’ that probably will never get off the ground. She’s alone most of the time and is pretty much a social pariah. She’s given up on ever finding love – and doesn’t even have friends. Monica still feels like she’s the punch line to a dirty joke.”

In late June, the former White House in­tern made a rare outing as part of a small dinner partyat Lucy’s El Adobe Cafe in Hollywood – where gawkers at other tables let fly with wisecracks.

Let this be a cautionary tale for young women tempted to commit adultery with a married man. It will cost you way more than it’ll cost him. The world is a cruel place where gender and power rule.

Former Democratic Senator John Edwards Indicted!

Pretty boy John Edwards — former Democratic senator, John Kerry’s vice presidential running-mate, and a 2008 Dem presidential candidate – has just been indicted by a federal grand jury for misuse of campaign funds on his mistress with whom he carried on an adulterous affair while his wife, Elizabeth, was sick with terminal breast cancer.

The Associated Press reports, June 3, 2011:

RALEIGH, North Carolina (AP) — A federal grand jury has indicted two-time presidential candidate John Edwards over massive sums of money spent to keep his mistress in hiding during the peak of his 2008 campaign for the White House.

The case of USA v. Johnny Reid Edwards contains six counts, including
conspiracy, four counts of illegal campaign contributions and one count of false statements. The indictment was returned in the Middle District of North Carolina Friday. An Edwards spokeswoman said she wasn’t aware of the filing and declined immediate comment.

The indictment is the culmination of a federal investigation that lasted more
than two years and scoured through virtually every corner of Edwards’ political career.

Edwards’ attorney Greg Craig was traveling to meet with prosecutors in North Carolina, an indication that the former presidential candidate will likely be charged, either in a grand jury indictment or in a negotiated charge to which he would plead guilty. A person with knowledge of the investigation said Craig, a Washington lawyer who was President Barack Obama’s first White House counsel, planned to be in his client’s home state Friday, where prosecutors were prepared to file charges. The source insisted on anonymity in order to discuss the private negotiations.

Meanwhile, The National Enquirer — the supermarket tabloid disdained by the MSM, which doggedly pursued the Edwards scandal and broke the story of his “love child” conceived by mistress Rielle Hunter — is reporting that Hunter has dumped Edwards, the man whom she called her “soul mate” and love of her life.

Yet Another Reason Newt is Toast

I don’t know why Newt Gingrich even thinks he has the remotest chance of winning a GOP presidential primary, even less of becoming President. It must be his grandiose narcissism that distorts his reality assessment.

In case you need one more reason to not vote for Newt Gingrich, here’s Reason No. xxx:

Gingrich — who urges fiscal discipline for America — owes as much as $500,000 to Tiffany’s. [Source]

If, God forbid, I were Newt’s wife (no. 3), I’d check my jewelry box ’cause I doubt those Tiffany’s baubles went all to her. This is Wife No. 3 with whom Newt carried on an extramarital affair while he was still married to Wife No. 2, whom he cold-heartedly informed he wanted a divorce while she was in her hospital bed.

None of this really matters because a Zogby Poll of May 24, 2011 showed that support for the Newt had sunk to near-zero among Republican voters. That’s a steep fall because only 3 weeks ago a state-by-state opinion poll had Gingrich in the 30s and 40s when placed in a hypothetical contest against Barack Obama.

As Marjorie Haun of Technorati.com puts it, despite Gingrich’s extramarital affair and a likability deficit, it was not until he broke Ronald Reagan’s 11th Commandment, “Thou shalt not speak ill of any fellow Republican” — belittling Congressman Paul Ryan’s “Path to Prosperity” budget plan as “Right-wing social engineering” – that he spiraled into popular oblivion.

I hope he stays there.

Young Males Sexually Harassed at NSA

An exclusive-to-subscribers Wayne Madsen Report paints a disturbing portrait of the White House’s National Security Agency (NSA) as a hotbed of sex scandals – of adultery, child porn, and gay sexual harassment. Worse still, the very group responsible for security for NSA with the sinister name of “Q”, is engaged in a systematic coverup of the scandals and threatening whistleblowers.

Wayne Madsen is a Washington, DC-based investigative reporter who was a U.S. Naval officer and had worked for the NSA. In “NSA ‘Q Group’ Protecting Sex Scandals While Plugging Potential Leaks,” Madsen writes on January 10, 2011:

WMR’s intelligence sources report that the National Security Agency’s “Q Group,” the directorate responsible for overall security for NSA, is actively investigating and harassing NSA employees who have reported on senior officials at the sprawling intelligence agency, which now includes the new U.S. Cyber Command, of engaging in adulterous trysts with subordinates and possessing improper sexual material, including child pornography.

WMR has previously reported on the improper activities of the Q Group, which has become a virtual uncontrolled FBI within the NSA. Q continues to protect NSA senior officials who engage in and promote a culture of sexual exploitation of junior employees at the intelligence agency. Q Group has also misused NSA psychologists and psychiatrists to deem anyone who charges senior officials of the agency with sexual misconduct or harassment unfit to hold a security clearance for reasons of mental impairment.

On August 28, 2009, WMR reported: “NSA Security, headed up by Kemp Ensor III, and NSA medical worked in tandem to deny security access to employees determined to be mentally unfit to have access to classified information at NSA. However, due to the attrition of highly-qualified personnel, the security-medical duo is now prescribing Prozac and Zoloft for NSA employees who refuse to fall into line. NSA is abuzz with the new requirement for employees to take what they call ‘happy pills.’ The sexual harassment scene has also reportedly changed at Fort Meade. In the past, sexual harassment at NSA involved older male managers preying on young female employees. That has now changed in what has become an environment of ‘do ask and do tell.’ WMR has been informed that there is an increase in complaints about sexual harassment from new young male hires about being forced into ‘kinky rendezvouses’ with older male managers.”

Q Group has also gone outside of its legal authority to harass the families and friends of former agency employees who have brought charges against NSA for sexual harassment and misconduct. WMR has learned of NSA personnel illegally masquerading as phone company technicians who entered the property of the family of one such ex-employee. In another case, Q Group personnel poisoned two pet dogs of the family of an ex-employee under NSA surveillance. Q Group personnel have also been used to harass the ex-spouses of senior NSA officials involved in child custody cases. WMR has also been informed that Q Group has harassed NSA employees who have married the ex-wives of NSA senior officials who have ongoing legal battles with their ex-husbands.

Q Group is able to conduct its harassment of civilians in the Fort Meade area with a “wink and a nod” from local law enforcement and other officials. NSA senior managers have dipped into NSA’s substantial slush fund to lavish money on community service projects and programs in cash-strapped local municipalities and counties. The concept of the “friendly NSA that provides funds and jobs” has bought loyalty and silence from local and state of Maryland officials. In addition, WMR has learned that NSA has placed agents within the congressional offices of local members of Congress in order to interdict and retaliate against NSA whistleblower congressional complaints. The NSA “embeds,” who work in concert with NSA’s Office of Legislative Affairs, are found within the offices of Maryland Senators Barbara Mikulski and Ben Cardin, and Maryland Representatives C.A. “Dutch” Ruppersberger, Steny Hoyer, Elijah Cummings, Chris Van Hollen, and Paul Sarbanes, and is currently inserting an agent into the office of freshman Representative Andy Harris.

As discovered in a January 2005, Q Group Personnel Security organizational chart obtained by WMR, Q2, contains an office of counter-intelligence, which WMR has reported has been involved in illegal surveillance of individuals far beyond the NSA infrastructure.

On July 3, 2009, WMR reported: “The Obama administration, rather than lessen the pressure on the NSA personnel, has turned up the heat and is resorting to even more draconian methods to ensure silence. The word from inside NSA is that a state of fear exists and the mission of the agency, to conduct surveillance of foreign communications to provide threat indications and warnings to U.S. troops and policy makers and protect sensitive U.S. government communications from unauthorized eavesdropping is suffering as a result.” Our latest information is that the Obama administration is increasing pressure on NSA personnel to deter leaks.

Obama’s Justice Department is now actively retroactively pursuing U.S. intelligence community leakers from the time of the Bush administration. [They include former CIA officer Jeffrey Sterling, former NSA official Thomas Drake, former State Department analyst Stephen Kim.]….
