The Left, who call themselves liberals and Progressives, are a curious political breed.
In his book, The Liberal Mind, psychiatrist Lyle H. Rossiter, Jr., M.D., identifies irrationality as the Left’s dominant attribute — an irrationality that is “the product of psychopathology.”
At the least, liberals are rank hypocrites. Instead of the bleeding hearts they claim to be, liberals are stingy toward the poor and needy; they are generous only with other people’s money. Instead of treating all peoples by the content of their character, liberals are racially discriminatory; some are black and brown supremacists. Instead of the feminists they pretend to be, liberals are misogynists – hateful and vicious toward conservative women. Instead of their rhetoric of being for the common man, liberals are elitist snobs who constantly denigrate their political opponents by portraying conservatives as ignorant, dumb rednecks without a college education or the proper Ivy League credentials.
At the root of the Liberal Syndrome is a mental and moral disorder. Liberals are miserable, bitter, malcontent people with a perennial chip on their shoulder. They are arrogant and narcissistic, with a self-serving relativist morality. That is why they resent religions that have a moral code, especially Christianity that believes human beings are a fallen creation who are redeemed only through the self-sacrifice of a loving but moral God.

There are so many examples of rank hypocrisy from the left, I could mention dozens right off the top of my head. But here’s just one, which nails three hypocrites at once!
A couple of weeks ago, Wanda Sykes and Kathy Griffin, two lefty “comediennes,” appeared on Larry King to discuss the subject of bullying. This was in the wake of the homosexual college student committing suicide after he was videotaped by his roommate, who broadcast it on the internet. Sykes and Griffin turned into sob sisters, concerned about cruelty and lack of compassion. But when Wanda Sykes was “entertaining” an audience which included the president, she joked about Rush Limbaugh’s kidneys failing. She really scored with that one, because Obama laughed. And not long ago, Kathy Griffin made the following statement: “I’d like to push Sarah Palin down the stairs.”
HYPOCRITES!

Funny, the liberals I come into contact with every day are nothing like you describe. I find them to be idealistic, passionate misguided souls. They are not bitter malcontents but rather hungry for meaning and justice in a fractured, spiritually impoverished society.
In truth, this website seems to reflect the characteristics you attribute to some nebulous concept of the “left.” There is so much anger and paranoia. To be so judgmental and lacking in humility is not healthy. My Christian faith helps with overcome these shortcomings.

Surely you must know that many leftist and rightwing totalitarian regimes frequently accused their opponents of being mentally ill. It is a classic tactic used to dehumanize and discredit those with opposing ideas.
I find it sad that you justify using this same Orwellian tactic because some people called you names. As a Christan you are better than that.
Personally I pray for these people, rather than try to dehumanize them, just as I will pray for you Eowyn. I will repeat what I wrote before. To be so judgmental and lacking in humility is not healthy. I say that not in judgment of you but because I know from personal experience.

A year ago, I was where you were — until Steve and I began researching and writing our book project on the Left (now postponed because of the greater urgency of blogging). Our systematic research discovered, to our dismay, that at least the most vocal and prominent members of the Left are exactly as I described in my Introduction to “Leftwing Pathology.”

Peter, I am the Steve referred to in Eowyn’s response to you. I will tell you for a fact that most people on Huffpo, Mother Jones and last but not least NPR are absolutely out of their mind. I spent 6 months on those sites reading the stories and comments for our research. You go there for a few months and you will need therapy. I have not come to this conclusion lightly. I had my life threatened many times, then when the moderator deleted their hateful comments they wanted him dead. Maybe not all on the Left fall into this category, but the ones I dealt with were out of their mind like a rabid dog. I’ve always looked for places we could agree. Tried to be open to other points of view, but naa, they just want blood.
Oh and of course everything from the Bubonic plague forward was G.W’s fault. You know, most trolls who come by here just want an argument. Once in a rare while, we have had some who were very nice and a discussion ensued. Here’s the kicker: they were actually open to new thoughts and when presented with evidence to the contrary, Lo!, they came over from the dark side.
That to me is the main difference between left and right. Left will never change their mind, or rarely. Whereas the Conservative when given new facts will adjust accordingly. Examples of leftie hatefulness are everywhere. For example, the day after the finale of Dancing With The Stars, Sandra Bernhard appeared on The Joy Behar Show and called Bristol Palin “a hooker.” Last spring, another leftie “comedienne,” Kathy Griffin, said “I’d like to push Sarah Palin down the stairs.”

Strangely enough, Kathy Griffin and Wanda Sykes appeared on Larry King a few months ago to speak out against bullying and harassment. For anyone who’s forgotten, Wanda Sykes is the so-called comedienne who “entertained” an audience of dinner guests by saying she hoped Rush Limbaugh’s liver would fail. President Obama was present at this event, and he LAUGHED. Heartily. But just a few weeks later, he was asking for “civility” in political discourse.
The hypocrisy of the left is truly astounding. But it’s their apparent UNAWARENESS of their own hypocrisy that makes me believe there’s a detachment from reality which is responsible for that. In other words, mental illness.

Just stumbled across this blog, so my comment is rather late in coming. But I wish to address your comments that purport to show that Jesus was no “peace activist.” I agree that Jesus was not a “peace activist,” at least not in the sense that we understand the term today. But it is equally wrong to imply that Jesus was therefore affirming the necessity of war or somehow excoriating liberals for capitulation or surrender.
First of all, bear in mind that the Pharisees were the “conservatives” of Jesus’ day. I won’t go into it now, but there are some striking parallels between the religious conservatives of the 1st C, and the religious conservatives of the 21st.
With respect to the incident of the clearing of the Temple, I would point you to Luke’s account in particular. Luke has a special take on this account relative to the other Evangelists (though I don’t think his take is at all contradictory with the other gospel writers). He is primarily concerned with economic injustice. He states that his reason for driving out the merchants was that “My house will be a house of prayer’; but you have made it ‘a den of robbers.’” The ‘den of robbers’ is a reference to Jeremiah’s Temple sermon in Jer. 7. I won’t go into details, since it involves some complex Hebrew exegesis, but I would argue that there is strong evidence that the Temple sermon reflects back on the Deuteronomic Code, which foresaw the Temple as the place for the caring for the poor, the widowed, the orphan, and the foreigner. I am convinced that Luke, in turn, is reflecting upon the Deuteronomic code in his account of Jesus clearing the Temple. He is interested in showing that the Pharisees and the religious establishment had neglected their duty of caring for the poor, the orphan, the widow and the foreigner. Jesus was enacting judgment against a system that had set national holiness over and above justice for the poor, the weak and the marginalized. Jesus was profoundly concerned about justice for the poor. Does this make Jesus a conservative or a liberal?
While the reference to “white sepulchres” is taken from Matthew, I would similarly argue that Jesus is similarly taking up a theme of judgment upon the religious order that had set nationalistic goals above the weightier elements of the Law. Does this make Jesus a conservative or a liberal?
Does Jesus take sin seriously? Absolutely. Does Jesus’ declaration that the Pharisees are “spawn of Satan” make him a conservative? Remember, the Pharisees were the conservatives of First Century Israel.
And surely, you are not suggesting that when Jesus claims to bring a sword rather than peace, he is calling his followers to take up arms – a sort of first century Second Amendment? Nothing could be farther from the truth! A cursory review of the context of that saying clearly indicates that Jesus is not calling for armed conflict of any form. In fact, the one instance where the sword is used in his defense, he rebukes the wielder (Peter) and proceeds to heal the victim of the sword.
When Jesus claims that he brings a sword in Matt. 10:34, vv. 35-39 make it abundantly clear that he is referring to a metaphorical sword that divides family members as a result of their allegiance to him. There is no exegetical room here to propose that Jesus is referring to a physical sword, culminating in physical violence at his initiative. This is an appalling distortion of the Scripture.
Jesus is neither a conservative or a liberal – at least not in terms of the modern use of those words. Yet, the contours of the gospels, especially Luke, reveal a deep concern for the marginalized in his teaching and actions. This concern goes beyond simple charity, but rebellion against the institutional and economic structures that keep them bound there. This is something that modern-day conservatives need to take more seriously.

Liberals like you who whine incessantly about “social/economic justice” and refer to the Gospels to buttress your position neglect and forget two crucial differences between Christ’s time and ours:
(1) In Christ’s days, THERE WAS NO WELFARE STATE!!!! Which is why Christ exhorts on private charity to help the poor.
(2) In Christ’s time, the poor were the absolutely poor, i.e., poverty was measured in ABSOLUTE terms, i.e., poverty is absolute deprivation– the lack of basic goods such as food, clothing and shelter for human survival. But in America today, “poverty” is defined in RELATIVE terms, as relative deprivation, which means the government decides you are “poor” not because you are unable to purchase the basic goods of life, but because you have less compared with others. In other words, even if all Americans become wealthier as measured in absolute dollars, as long as there are some who have more than others, there’ll be “poor” people. The only way to get rid of “the poor” is if everyone is equal. The government’s definition of “poverty” is, therefore, not about poverty at all. It’s about empowering Big Government to redistribute wealth in the name of equality and the “war on poverty” that, since Lyndon Johnson started it nearly half a century ago, has only become worse.
B. Your demonization of Conservatives as uncaring is also bogus. Arthur C. Brooks, a public policy professor at Syracuse University spent years investigating Americans’ charity-giving. In 2006, he published the results of his research in the book, Who Really Cares. Drawing on survey data, Brooks found that 75% of American families donate to charity, giving $1,800 each, on average. A registered Democrat who was raised in a progressive academic family, Brooks had expected liberals would give the most. Instead, to his surprise, he found that conservatives were far more compassionate than liberals, giving about 30% more despite making slightly less money. In other words, American Conservatives not only help the poor with their taxes, they give more to charity in both dollars and service than liberals.

I incorporate by reference everything that Eowyn, Steve and miss911ninja have said as also my rebuttal. However, once again, we have liberal bloggers and liberal sympathetic bloggers (those individuals who do not have even the courage to straight out identify themselves) who inappropriately bring Our Lord into the metaphysical identification of being a “liberal.”
Our Lord, Jesus, is the Second Person of the Blessed Trinity, who is God to ALL men and women. Nevertheless, he was not brutally tortured and nailed to a cross because “he was a nice guy!” He did not mince words and play political games. Our Lord is LOVE IN TOTALITY AND TRUTH. He made it abundantly clear that he came for everyone, to save them from sin, from evil, from the devil and his minions, to open the gates of heaven for us, and then inviting us to share in this salvation process. He was not a wimp. It is so ridiculous to compare him to a hippy. Our Lord cautioned all of us, “not to call evil, good, and good, evil.” This is precisely the motto of the liberal creed. The liberals advocate for abortion on demand, having killed 48,000,000 BABIES, under the guise of protecting women’s rights! This is the most evil that mankind has ever orchestrated, but the liberals and their abortion industry advocate for abortion, and partial birth abortion-taking a baby who could actually live in the world, and cruelly killing it! Mother Teresa of Calcutta said that abortion is the highest evil and is destroying our country. Yet, the president of our country is a rabid advocate of abortion, a rabid liberal.
Jesus taught us, “If you love me, keep my Commandments.” In order to comply with His directive, we must JUDGE what is right, and what is wrong, according to the tenets of those Ten Commandments! Jesus taught us not to judge the soul of another, and whether or not a person will go to heaven or hell. However, he required us to judge whether an action is right or wrong. This is why He said that the road to heaven is narrow, and there are few who enter into heaven. If we were not required to judge what is right and what is wrong, we could never go through that narrow gate. And, it is also our responsiblity to counsel the ignorant and to expose evil, which requires judgment, and not doing so puts others’ souls in danger and our souls as well. This is known as a “spiritual work of mercy.”
As to a diagnosis that Jesus opposed the Pharisees, who were the conservatives of His day, lacks knowledge and context. There were multiple Jewish factions that existed then and that exist now. The Pharisees could be labeled conservative on some issues, and liberal on others. Give me a break, Mr. Fear! Alexander Pope said, “A little knowledge is a dangerous thing!” It seems like Mr. Fear is suffering from projection. He talks about being humble, yet he is attempting to lecture to us all about Biblical exegesis, not being aware at all the background or educational prowess of Eowyn, Steve, our ninja heroine or myself. Wake up-you are not humble, – quite the contrary, you are full of pride. Humility is not a hand-ringing, rolling over virtue, that nurtures being obsequious and lukewarm. Humility is acknowledgment of the Truth which requires the lover of truth to stand up and be counted, not to wander around aimlessly saying, “love, love and love,” when indeed and in fact a person who loves truth is not only humble, but loving. It takes guts to choose between right and wrong, to oppose abortion on demand, to oppose the homosexual active lifestyle. Jesus wanted us to live our faith and to stand up against sin and the devil! As to Jesus making it apparent he was for the marginalized, He clearly was – this included rich and poor, weak and strong, holy and unholy, is who he identified with. He did not just come for the poor who did not have enough to eat and did not have the bare necessities. He was also referring to the poor in spirit — those individuals who are longing for God, who do not know God and who are lost to sin. He ate not only with the economically poor, but with Lazarus and his sisters who were wealthy, with sinners, tax collectors, with Pharisees and Sadducees.
But most of all, Jesus wanted us to Trust in Him and choose Him, not to be lukewarm, to stand up for His commandments and to do so with right judgment, to be kind and compassionate, yet to speak up against evil and against those who call evil, good, and good, evil, and to behave accordingly.
The liberal ideology is deception itself – wake up and smell the roses! When Jesus became angry and drove out the money changers, he was angry because they were usurious, they were changing foreign monies into a profit, kind of like selling tickets for higher prices. Not only did this occur in His Father’s house, but it was the substance of the activity that Jesus objected against – very similar to Obama’s economics!
In any event, read the book that Eowyn brought to our attention written by a psychiatrist, Dr. Rossiter, and read all of the posts and entries set out above! Well it definitely sounds like most articles on this website are opinion based. I see almost no citations. Also, Proverbs 29:11 is usually translated as “Fools give full vent to their rage, but the wise bring calm in the end.” Sometimes I make up scripture too :]
Well I’m curious “loveobama” (in your email address), how many of these articles did you actually read (hint, click on link and it will take you to the citation)? Because all the OWS articles are based on actual events that took place. The other postings may include opinions but they are based on actual events/occurences. I know that may be hard to process with a brain full of Kool-aid.

Also, how about expounding on the influence of Westcott, Hort and Maurice on the New Age Bible Translations.
And some of us would really like to hear about literal translation vs. dynamic equivalency.

I see this thread goes back to Sept, 2010. Looking at it from a “big-picture” or “overview” perspective, I wonder if I haven’t actually seen Harriet Beecher Stowe’s (FOTM) contemporaries at work, revealing the cruelty of a more subtle form of enslavement, that of an insidious and pervasive humanism. It seems, at least to me, the farther we get away from Creation, both the Biblical account and our belief in God’s authorship, the more trouble we get ourselves into, turning from the Divine to that which satisfies our human nature. In my view, Multiculturalism, political correctness and Diversity are just some of the common banners of our hunger to satisfy ourselves. Will we never stop the cry for manna?
Stowe finishes her classic work by saying “A day of grace is yet held out to us. Both the North and South have been guilty before God; and the Christian church has a heavy account to answer. Not by combining together, to protect injustice and cruelty, and making a common capital of sin, is this Union to be saved, but by repentance, justice and mercy.”
I “hunger” for peace, but don’t really believe I’ll fully taste it until I take my last breath. Until then, I find great company and hope in my “Harriets” on FOTM, Thank you for your witness, your love for God and not “bending over” to worship contemporary political idols.

The last hour spent reading “Fellowship Of Minds” has given me not only great pleasure, but also hope. I was beginning to think that such clear thinking was about to become a thing of the past.
I spend a great deal of my time on a website that that is related to a particular industry, with a membership which is world-wide. I start a lot of discussions, about many things, but because I have become aware of the fact that many people around the world are not “big” on the U.S. in general, I sometimes catch a lot of “flack”, as I have begun to realize that much of the world is in fact, very liberal.
As I make a point of being a conservative, a lot of people despise my posts, and push the “suggest delete” button. I have been deleted many times, but I always email the moderators, thank them, and attempt to “see it their way”.
Recently, I have begun to get a lot of “instant messages” from members, thanking me, and telling me how much they enjoy my “stories”………all of which are true, BTW.
I am always looking for confirmation of things Obama does, which I know are bad, and in following up on an email, I found your website. ( Kinda like the time I found a diamond ring in a gravel parking lot ! )

I had a Muslim that lived next door to me at a condo complex. What did I do? I was friendly and we got along just fine. I did end up selling my place and moving from there not because of him but because of a cheating boyfriend that lived in the same complex
