Before I start, I want to give you a little background on myself. I am a Columbia Grad, I hold BAs in Political Science and American History. I have worked for both the Bush and Obama administrations as well. I am well versed in the Constitutional and military history of the United States and have also, because of requirements at Columbia, was required to take numerous courses on world history.
Now, to start, I would like to go back in time around 800 years. It is 1211, arguable the height of power for the Catholic Church. At this point in history, life revolved around God, one went to church on a daily basis, gave what little money they had left after paying taxes in manditory church fees, and was held, not to a standard of worldly law, but to a standard of Gods law. If a women commited adultry, their punishment could have been anything from stoning to drawing and quartering. If you were caught stealing, you LOST A HAND. Additionally, a HOLY WAR, commisioned by Pope Innocent III, had just reconquered the city of Zara in in modern Croatia. And just for good measure, Pope Innocent had just commisioned the Childrens Crusade…I’ll let you guys look that one up.
Lets look at the Islamic world during this period. While Europe was dealing with the fanatisism of the Roman Catholic Church, Islam was actually in a Golden Age of Scientific thought. The majority of the advances that were made during the Roman Empire survived in certain areas of the Middle East, namely in the area between Jeruselem and Egypt. Great Islamic kings like Saladin, reigned over a prosperous period in which advances in Mathematics and Medicine actually made life significantly better. The discoveries about mathematics and medicine were actually used as the basis for many of the advancements made in the Renaissance by Western Scholars. Overall, the Middle East was just a better place to be than Europe.
Now, you dont need to be Einstein to catch my drift. What is going on currently within Islam is actually a repeat of what happened during the European Dark Ages. Islam is in the throws of its Dark Ages. There are numerous arguments discussing why they are where they are. But the one that garners the most weight from social scientists (I know because my professor wrote the thesis) is simply that the West pushed them into it. If you look at why Militant Islamic movements came into existance, than you will see that it was a direct response to the continued political support of brutal regional dictators by the West, namely the United States. The Militant Islamic movement came to pass in order to free themselves from repressive, American supported rule. Monarchs like the Shah of Iran and Muammar Gaddafi had the support of the west. We supported brutal dictators in the region, and because of that, Militants like the late Osama Bin Ladan, had a target to focus all of their hatred. That is why anti-American sentiment is so high in that part of the world, because we cant keep our hands out of the region.
How do we solve these issues? What changed in Europe during the Dark Ages? What weakened the overwhelming power of the church? Simply put, people got tired of being abused. The Protestant Reformation, the creation of the early German democracies in North Western Germany, all of these had tremendous implications for civil liberties. The change came from the people. Now, lets review current events: 4 countries are currently undergoing political upheaval, Tunisia, Egypt, Syria and Libya. All have had horrible, fundamentalist leaders. The people revolt, mostly because their leaders cannot provide them with basic necessities (ie, food, water, jobs, security). Most nations in this list are leaning towards libralization, Egypt has already been talking about estabilishing a Multi-party Democratic system similar to that of the 70′s. Libyian opposition leaders have told the US that they are also considering the same thing. The movement is happening.
So the point of my story, the issue IS NOT ISLAM. Islam and Christianity share so many similarities in terms of messages being taught. The game is peaceful. MONOTHEISM IS PEACEFUL. Jesus didnt order the Crusades, nor did Allah order Jihad. Men make these decisions. You loop all Muslims together as being anti-American but they are not. The moderates in the Middle East dont exist for the same reasons they didnt exist in Europe during the 1200′s, because their opinions often result in accusations of heresy. Dont preach to people that Islam preaches hate, because it doesnt…at all. In fact, Islam draws so many people because it preaches love, just like Christianity. In fact, to go back to history, Islam spread peacefully to all corners of the world along trade routes…Christianity used a blade. Just food for thought, stop hate mongering…its counter productive.
Before I start my response to Reason‘s (Oh great one!) long didactic lecture, I want to give you a little background about myself. I am a UC Berkeley grad, the holder of a B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. in Political Science. I am also a Professor Emerita, having retired 3 years ago as a Full Professor, the highest rank an academic can reach. I am also the single author of 4 prestigious university press books, the co-author of another six, and countless refereed scholarly journal articles. Unlike Reason who claims expert knowledge of Islam because he read his professor’s “thesis” (which means it was in manuscript form instead of accepted and published by a publisher), I have studied Islam and read many books on the subject. More than reading, I had taught the subject in my course on Comparative Politics. And unlike the pompous Reason, I am a Christian with some knowledge of Christianity, specifically that the Crusades (now condemned by the PC Left) were a reaction to Muslim conquest — attempts by European Christians to retrieve and salvage their lands that had been conquered with the sword by Islam.
I have four points to make to Reason:
1. Your claim that it’s the West that provoked Islamic extremism is straight out of the mouths of radical Muslims themselves. How convenient. Then there are scholars/experts who say that the West’s “provocation” is merely that we are more powerful and more advanced — technologically, scientifically, economically, politically. And so the Islamic World feels a sense of inferiority, so they react with hatred and violence. Since you are so learned, you should look up Carl Jung’s concept of The Shadow. Instead of acknowledging their own failings, Muslims project “their shadow” onto the West. By scapegoating the West (“it’s all your fault!”), they absolve themselves of their defects and deficiencies. Except, of course, deep down they know full well theirs is a retrograde atavistic civilization, stuck in the 14th (or is it the 4th?) century. Good grief, in their Jihad, they must use the technology (cell phones, computers…) and weapons (bombs, guns, passenger planes) produced by the same Great Satan they abhor. How pathetic is that?
2. You claim that Islam is really a religion of peace, but you provided us with no evidence or source citations. We are just supposed to suck up your proclamation as the truth. Sadly, a Muslim cleric Omar Bakri Mohammed proclaims the exact opposite. In documents seen by The Daily Telegraph, al-Muhajiroun claimed: “Terrorism is a part of Islam” and “Allah made it obligatory to prepare and to terrify the enemy of Allah”. “The kuffar [non-Islamic-believers] of USA and UK are without doubt our enemy. There is no such thing as an innocent kafir [non-believer], innocence is only applicable for the Muslims. Not only is it obligatory to fight them, it is haram [forbidden] to feel sorry for them.” That is just one example. There are countless other examples that, given your impressive B.A.s in Political Science and American History, you can surely find for yourself.
3. You say that “moderate” Muslims are silent because they fear being branded “heretics” by the “radicals.” How do you know that? Did you hear or read “moderates” confessing to this? If so, do be so good as to point us to your source(s). To quote St. Thomas More, a martyr to the Catholic faith: “qui tacet consentire videtur” – he who is silent seems to consent.
4. Lastly, you accuse Fellowship of the Minds of engaging in “hate mongering.” You poor man. Two Bachelor’s of Arts degrees from Columbia U. have not helped you to either reason, see, or even read clearly. Our posts are informative. You have confused information — with which you disagree and of which you disapprove — with “hate mongering.” I can be as confused as you are in thinking and reasoning, and so accuse you of “hate mongering” against this blog, but then I would be in the same muddy muck as you.

As for theories regarding why Islam hates the West, that is for every person to decide for themselves. Im of the school that believes that US involvement in most regions has spurred anti-American violence. It is your right to believe the converse. As this is a blog for exchanging ideas, I figured I would throw a new one on the playing field.
I do find it interesting though that you quote a clerics comments on the Koran rather than the text itself. I can link litterally hundreds of quotes showing the love of the Koran. And likewise I can link hundreds of quotes from Catholic and Christian priests regarding the heretical beliefs of Muslims. The hateful quotes of the priests have no impact on the stories or teachings from the bible. The power of religion, much like the power of government, is in rhetoric, not in idea. It only takes one man with a twist on a powerful idea, to set off a revolution.
I also have a comment on the issue of moderates in Islam. I compare it to moderates in the United States. I am a moderate, neither party represents what I believe. On the one side, Liberals require me to subsidize people who do not contribute to society nearly as much as I do. On the other side, there are biggoted men, mostly from the south, who believe that the only way to govern our nation is through the bible. The moderates in between have no party of their own, have no unified voice in American politics, and therefore, their ideas fall by the wayside in favor of the ideas of the far right and left. Islam is the same, except the conservatives have been extremely effective in silencing the left and the middle. Why do you think no one says anything. In 1978, the Ayatollah Khomeini said: “The intellectuals, the writers, those who have information and thoughts, you see some of them take their pens and in the name of democracy they write whatever they want and they cause disagreements. This group of so-called intellectuals has to correct themselves. Whatever we are suffering is from this group of intellectuals and judges. What we are suffering is because of them.” This is clearly directed at liberals in society who question the authority of fundamentalists. I dont need to hear or read an interview with some farmer in the dessert to hear him say I cant say what i want, the rhetoric from the Islamic Revolution says it for him. We are talking about an area of the world where the regimes use intimidation in the way of political imprisonment and torture (Iran, Egypt, Syria, Libya) to silence moderates and liberals, they have been doing it for 30 years, thats how we know it.
How about the moderate clerics in the US who say that this is not what Islam is about? What about former Indonesian President, the late Abdurrahman Wahid? He oversaw arguably the largest, and most peaceful group of Muslims in the world. Saying that moderate Muslims dont exist is foolish, especially for a noted political scientist like yourself. Let me again remind you, people are reluctant to express themselves if the ramification for their action is the loss of their life.
And as for my reading comprehension, I assure you, it is outstanding. I read all of the posts before I wrote mine. You do indeed make valid points about what is going on. But as a member of such a prestigious institute of higher learning, I would think that instead of concentrating on how radical Islam is trying to pentrate the US and destroy or social values (which are…weak, for lack of a better term), you would concentrate on WHY radical Islam hates us so much. Yes, it’s true that some Muslims today have disgraced us, done unforgivable acts, killed and lied all in the name of Islam. But are you so naive that you believe whatever they claim? Although I am not very learned in regards to The Holy Bible. I know however, God did command even Christians to wage war against evil. As a Muslim I too truly believe Jesus Christ and the Holy Bible, however Bible has been inflicted by various changes in text in due time over the centuries. Holy Quran and Holy Bible are indeed the word of God, the same God. And there’s a very thin line of difference between the two religions.
It is an error to say God never supports war. In the world full of hatred and evil, war is inevitable.War according to Islam and Christianity both is allowed with the condition of it being for a noble cause. Moses (Peace be upon him), Jesus Christ (Peace be upon him) and Mohammad (Peace be upon him) all worshiped the same God. They believed and lived for one cause, to eradicate evil from the world. The Bible and the “Torah,” (not thora) are the same thing, with the Bible having the addition of the New Testament.
Islam is a mish-mash of Judaism, Christianity, and Baal worship. Mohammed was born in Mecca, A.D. 570 – centuries AFTER the apostle John died on the island of Patmos. He didn’t start the “religion of peace” until the age of 40, around the year A.D. 610. Up until this point – the Torah and the Gospels and Epistles had not even been put into book form yet.
The Qur’an is not the Word of God. Mohammed just took the verses from the Torah and the Epistles he liked, and left out the others. And then inserted his own “revelations.” Such as -
Verses 7, 8: “Till, when he reached the setting-place of the sun, he found it setting in a muddy spring, and found a people thereabout. We said: O Dhu’l-Qarneyn! Either punish or show them kindness.” [Quran 18.86]

I am a conservative Christian from the Midwest and proud of it but I just don’t see the merit of this article. All my life I’ve had people call me a hate monger and regressive by just taking Bible quotes out of context and using them against me and my faith. I don’t live the Bible to a tee, I interpret it to the best of my, my congregation and pastor’s ability and apply it to my life to make me the best moral person possible. Isn’t it more than likely that believers of Islam do the same? I could be wrong but these sound like writings from a long-ago-time when war and religious tensions ran high in developing areas fighting over land and political gain.
I’d appreciate any thoughts on that… But please atleast consider it. I’m all about the personal responsibility of the criminals that believe in Islam.. but I believe the same of murderers that are Christian, Jewish, Hindu, etc.

If you had, you’d know that what this Islam page addresses are precepts intrinsic to the beliefs of the Islamic religion and ideology, for example, the concepts of taqiyya (the Koran permits Muslims to lie about their beliefs to non-Muslims), infidels (all non-Muslims), and jihad (it is the duty of all Muslims to wage war against infidels). Please show me anywhere in the Old and New Testaments that allow Christians to lie about our faith. Countless Christians have and are presently being martyred — some in Muslim countries — because they refuse to renounce their faith in Jesus Christ.

I did see the video, read the commentary.
When I read, “It is the medieval darkness of Radical Islam (there is no moderate Islam)”. I might have too quickly assumed the statement was implying that Islam lacked the diversity of faith and its possible perversion that any religion holds.That’s where my comment on interpretation came from. I just don’t agree with “taqiyya” being an evil aspect and the quotes on war against non-believers being used by all Muslims, who would certainly not consider themselves “radical”. I believe just citing these quotes is damaging to any faith that looks to religious texts for guidance. I can only hope the 1 billion+ Islamic believers that are not involved in the “Holy War” believe in interpretation as I do.
I never claimed Christians were not being martyred and persecuted for their faith. No one could argue that Christianity does not have a noble history of people willing to profess their faith and take pride in their savior, die for those beliefs if necessary.We are truly an evangelical faith that believes in sharing our beliefs, peacefully when possible.

I have no idea if this thread is being followed anymore by anyone, but I’ll enter my question for consideration anyway.
I, like most Americans, can trace my family lineage to several different sources. Mine is a mix of various Eastern-European nationalities, Canadian, and deep-South (US). The current generation of my family (both immediate and extended) is about as thoroughly American as it gets. A cousin of mine (in her 30′s) recently converted to Islam, and married a fellow Muslim. She’s one of the best people I know, loving, and caring.
The question is simple, so I leave it open for anyone here to answer: Will you tell me that my cousin is one or more of the following?
1) A terrorist
2) A radical Muslim (or Islamist)
3) Anti-American
4) Dangerous
All I’m looking for is a simple yes or no. If you’d like to elaborate, feel free.

Fair enough. Although I’m curious as to where exactly Islam is anti-American. Obviously, I’m well aware of the fact that Islamic extremism is responsible for the vast majority of the world’s terrorism issue… I don’t deny that for a moment. What I do wonder, however, is where exactly Islam specifically is anti-American compared to any given religion, be it Judaism, Christianity, Buddhism, Hinduism, Jainism, etc.
My view (always open to new views, though), is that one’s adherence religious views and one’s adherence to national laws are (or should be) orthogonal to each other. At no point has my being a Christian ever come into any particular conflict with my observance of the laws of the United States. I consider myself both a Christian, and an American, but I don’t consider my American-ness as coming *from* my Christianity, nor do I consider my Christianity as being a result of being American. The two qualities serve two distinct roles in my life. Those on the Right (with whom I generally identify) will often attribute this sort of non-interference to the Judeo-Christian heritage of our country, a point I will concede for the purpose of this post.
Given this Judeo-Christian heritage, would Buddhist or Hindu views be considered equally anti-American as Islamic ones? Would any religion not based within the Judeo-Christian framework be considered so?
Would you consider it possible to be both Muslim, *and* either pro-American, or at least not anti-American?
Anyway, I’m not trying to impose myself on anyone… I just feel like I’ve read all I can read on the subject, and I won’t get any further insight without actually discussing this with people. Thank you ahead of time, for whatever responses you see fit to give.
Islam is anti-American because 1) they want Sharia Law to trump the Constitution, 2) they allow the atrocities to treat women, children, and homosexuals like dirt, 3) they deny freedom of religion (death penalty to those refusing to renounce Christianity), and 4) Islam is not a democracy.
My religion (Christianity) doesn’t support any of those listed above. My religion also doesn’t support lying, as Islam encourages. I don’t know enough about the other religions you meantion to speak of them.

As a libertarian (though not one of the Ron Paul Head-Up-My-Ass variety), I have a whole host of issues with the Fed, but unlike with the 7th Century illiterate barbarians, I am still not feeling the proverbial heat, as so far, the Fed hasn’t overtly killed millions of infidels (including, but not limited to, 3000 of my fellow citizens back on 9/11), and as far as I know, they aren’t currently looking to obtain nukes so they can kill even more Americans, or even Israelis.
It’s a matter of priorities, Ed.

It’s hard to read that many things from that many people and keep it all straight in your head. Dr. Eowyn and Sage Brush have certainly made the case for Christianity much better than I ever could, and I’m also convinced that Dr. Eowyn knows a lot more about Islam than I do.
Having said that, I won’t be trying to explain what the Quran says or doesn’t say. But I do have a few questions fro Mohammed, Nauman Shaw, Kezi, and Felex.
I have lived in the U.S A. all of my life; I like it here, even with all the problems we currently have. If I didn’t like it here, I would be hard put to think of some place else that I would rather live.
During the last 60 years or so, I have noticed literally millions of people who have emigrated to this country, because the “living conditions” in their former homelands were so poor, repressive, lacking in opportunity, and so on. A good many of these people have become very good American citizens. Most of these emigrants “assimilated” into our way of life, and have become very good and prosperous citizens. I can even think of some “emigrants” from war-time Nazi Germany who contributed much to our “space program”.
None of these people attempted to “change” America; to suit “their” preferences.
I remember, around the mid to late 70′s, 80′s and 90′s, I had occasion to go to the Detroit area a lot in my job. I noticed, seemingly over night, there were a hundred thousand Muslims living in suburbs of Detroit. A huge Mosque was built beside Interstate 75, just south of Toledo, Ohio.
Here’s what I don’t understand; we are told that Islam is “peaceful”..etc. etc. Yet I have seen zero interest on the part of any of these thousands of Muslims to “assimilate”, to become Americans. Yes, many have become American citizens, ( and reaped the many benefits therein ), but all this time, they don’t seem to like the “way” this country “is”…..so they seek to change it to better suit themselves.
I’m not trying to suggest here that all Muslims are bad; but I’m not basing my opinions on what I read in books, what I see in news papers; ( I’m basing my opinions on what my eyes see…..what my brain tells me !
Now…..Americans are indeed a strange people; I can clearly see why so many people from around the world “misunderstand” us. We tend to fight among ourselves a lot !
For years and years, black people were treated badly in the U.S. No doubt about that. But things changed; the civil rights movement came along, segregation of schools ended, etc. Something else happened that many people may, (or may not) have noticed; many “white folks” decided to “jump on the band wagon”, and over night, people who were insulting black people all their lives, are suddenly “very friendly” towards them !
( Anyone else notice this ? ) Most, if not all of these “friends” were liberals ! Yep, all of a sudden it became “fashionable” to champion civil rights.
Guess what……..here we are, a few decades later, and the whole process is happening all over again………only THIS time it’s “fashionable” to “champion” the Muslims ! ( Only now, there are even MORE Muslims….a LOT more !) And guess what again……..the greater their numbers become, in terms of % of population, the more “demanding” they become !
Many Americans have another serious problem……..they have very short memories; a few even conveniently forget about the 3,000 plus lives lost in NYC on 9-11-2001; but for some odd reason, we now have Muslims determined to build a Mosque almost beside Ground Zero ! ( How many think that’s a coincidence ?
So my question to the above mentioned folks is……….talk means nothing; show us some “evidence”……show us some “proof” that Islam is peaceful.
Show me ANYTHING that would indicate to any intelligent person that Islam is NOT about trying to subjugate the entire world.
BTW……….I thought I was finished, but I just thought of this………..
I happened to meet a Muslim fellow a few months ago; a very nice, very friendly, very intelligent man; we had a very nice discussion, and I learned a lot. ( Our discussion lasted for 5 hours )
I asked him many many questions, all the better to understand Islam. He told me he has been in the U.S. for 30 years now, and has done quite well. I asked him, after doing well for 30 years, how do you feel about this country now ? Here was his answer………….( I’ll attempt to paraphrase it )………Ahhh………this country has much “potential”…….it will be a very nice place AFTER it’s under sharia law !
If I was surprised, I didn’t show it; ( I still had more questions to ask )
He was explaining how Muslim children are named; by their fathers! “but what about your wife…….doesn’t she have a voice in this “? Ahhh yes, as long as she agrees with me ! ( So much for gender equality ! )
And how do you feel about homosexuals ? The answer to this wasn’t verbal……..just an index finger across the throat ! ( And a long explanation about the evils of homosexuality, for which the only “cure” is death ! ) One might think from this that homosexuality is rare in the Islamic world; ( I can assure you, this in not the case. )
So my question is………..if life is so good in Muslim countries, why are so many thousands of Muslims going to countries all over the world ? Why not just stay and “enjoy” life in the middle east, and south east Asia ?

Hey Charley! Seems you have observed collectively in and around your social circle. If I may attempt to answer your question…Their ‘not-always-so-hidden-agenda’ is to “change”/”assimilate” our country into an Islamic nation by way of domination via political maneuvers hidden under the guise of a religion…as this is their goal…to dominate the entire world and that ALL of mankind may become muslims and follow Islamic teachings. But if one is not so easily persuaded or converted, then one is considered an infidel, and thereby are inferior to the Islamic way of life, and should be eradicated and/or destroyed if the assimilation to Islam is not met by more ‘peaceful’ means… It is the only assumption/conclusion that can be drawn from their agenda. I hope I have covered it…it could be of more detail and depth, and for that, I apologize…but you should get the general idea of where this is going and what they are truly up to. You are so right, and I’m very aware of that. I merely wish to see how a few peaceful Muslims respond to my questions.
I purposely neglected to point out, the Muslim man I met was very friendly, very eager to answer my questions, but it was as if he had everything memorized. (And he really did have an excellent memory !)
I’m sure he saw me as someone who was questioning his own convictions, and I did nothing to change his mind about that. I have been “hearing about” Islam all my life; now I want to hear it from the people who embrace it.
I’m a reasonable person; I will listen to anyone, and treat them respectfully as long as they are not confrontational.
Right now, I have two main concerns; my second most pressing concern is the huge influx of Muslims into the U.S. I keep hearing, from all over the Muslim world, how bad the U.S. is; yet I see no decline in the number of Muslim people coming here.
My very first concern, and even more immediate, is my young grandson is currently acting as a missionary and is attempting to “share” Christian beliefs with Muslim youths in a friendly country which I can not mention on a forum. I am extremely concerned for his safety.
I have never heard of a Muslim being killed by a Christian for talking about Islam; yet we hear every day about Muslims killing Christians, all while being told that Islam is “peaceful”.
One thing that I am certain of after my discussion with this man that I spoke with is………..any attempt on the part of anyone to change his mind about his religion will certainly be futile.

Never said “our” religion is the best. But it certainly beats Islam, which seeks to keep women and homosexuals as second class citizens. And also encourages their followers to lie.
