Senate panel OKs tax-welfare benefits for newly legal immigrants

By Stephen Dinan – The Washington Times

Monday, May 20, 2013

The Senate Judiciary Committee voted Monday to allow illegal immigrants who get legal status to begin collecting tax-welfare payments, as the panel spent a fourth day working through amendments to the massive immigration bill and party-line splits began to emerge.

In one major change, the committee voted 17-1 to make a third drunken-driving conviction a deportable offense for the newly legalized immigrants if at least one of those offenses occurs after they are approved for legal status.

But immigrant-rights groups called that a rollback of due-process rights for the immigrants and said a drunken-driving incident shouldn’t cost someone a chance at citizenship.

“We cannot and will not support hard-line proposals that take away discretion and limit an individual’s ability to pursue the pathway to citizenship,” said Paromita Shah, associate director of the National Lawyers Guild’s National Immigration Project.

Overall, the committee continued to maintain the delicate balance struck by the “Gang of Eight” senators who negotiated the 867-page bill: Quick legal status for illegal immigrants, but delaying citizenship rights until after the administration spends more money on border security, puts in place a new electronic verification system to check workers’ status, and enacts an entry-exit system to check visas at airports and seaports.

In previous days’ action, two Republican members of the Gang of Eight — Sens. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina and Jeff Flake of Arizona — joined with Democrats to block a series of GOP amendments to stiffen the bill’s security.

But on Monday, the two Republicans sided with their party colleagues on key questions on giving illegal immigrants public benefits.

The 10 Democrats on the committee still outnumber the newly unified Republicans, but the votes signaled tough fights ahead on the Senate floor.

Parasites

Hopefully the republican-controlled House of Representatives will put a swift end to this insanity, as unlike the idiots currently populating the Senate, all of them will be up for reelection next year.

-But you will pardon me if I refrain from holding my breath.

As for myself, I am getting beyond tired of seeing Americans being treated like second-class citizens in favor of illegal invaders by our own government.

Those on that Senate committee that voted for this idiocy should be ashamed of themselves.

Of course, when you have no shame…

Islamic Terrorism: The Russians “Get It”

(AP) Russia detains 140 suspected Islamic extremists

MOSCOW

Russian police and security agents have detained 140 people at a mosque in Moscow on suspicion of involvement with Islamic extremism.

A statement from the Federal Security Agency reported by Russian news agencies said among those detained in the Friday action were 30 citizens of unspecified foreign countries.

The detentions come a week after the two suspects in the fatal Boston Marathon bombing were identified as originating from the Russian region of Chechnya and sympathizing with Islamic extremists.

There were no immediate reports of charges being filed. The security agency referred The Associated Press to a district office, where the telephone was not answered.

The reports cited the agency as saying the mosque previously has been visited by people who had been involved in preparing or carrying out terrorist attacks.

terror_attacksClearly the Russian government, no stranger to Islamic terrorism itself, is not encumbered by the self-destructive mental illness that is political correctness, as we seem to be hopelessly afflicted with it here in America.

Even our normally docile neighbors to the north appear to be catching on, and like the Russians, are taking proactive steps to try and protect their citizens from the 7th Century primitives.

Yet here in post 9/11 America, the supposedly most powerful nation the world has ever seen - a place where five Jihadists have successfully reached their targets since January 20th, 2009, the man charged with defending us from our enemies cannot even bring himself to utter the phrase Islamic terrorism.

I hope we will not wind up eating a couple of cities before this nation, and its government, finally wake up to the reality that is Islam.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — A man who was found dead hanging by a rope off an 18-story Sacramento high-rise appears to have been a graffiti tagger, Sacramento police said Monday.

Fire Battalion Chief Marc Bentovoja said the man appears to have died accidentally of asphyxiation when he created a harness from the rope and lowered himself down the east side of the office building.

“From everything we can tell, he didn’t have any special rope rappelling equipment on, climbing equipment or anything like that,” he said. “He appeared to be looped into the rope.”

Police department spokeswoman Michele Gigante said Monday afternoon that investigators found a can of spray paint on the part of a balcony where the ropes were anchored. A tool for etching glass was found on the ground below his body, she said.

Gigante said building surveillance showed the man entering the building alone on Sunday. Police believe he gained access to the roof of the nearly 240-foot building and lowered himself three floors down to the balcony before lowering himself again.

Police and fire crews responded after receiving a call at 7:44 a.m. Monday. Rescue personnel were seen rappelling down the side of the building to check on the man, but he was already dead. The body was retrieved shortly after 9 a.m.

The coroner’s office will conduct an autopsy to determine the official cause of death. It is not releasing the man’s identity until his relatives are notified.

Bentovoja said the man did not appear to work for the building.

Formally named the 1201 K Tower, the building houses offices for lobbyists, public relations businesses and law firms that do business two blocks away at the Capitol.

The man’s death comes less than three weeks after police say a 22-year-old convicted graffiti tagger fell to his death while spray-painting a freeway bridge in Sacramento. Gigante said the deaths were unrelated.

Florida Atlantic University ‘Jesus stomping’ case: Student Ryan Rotelas upset, Rick Scott comments

Posted: 5:20 AM

BOCA RATON, Fla. – State education officials will be taking a closer look at Florida Atlantic University today after Gov. Rick Scott responded to a controversial classroom exercise.

A class, taught by Vice Chairman of the Palm Beach County Democratic Party Deandre Poole, was reportedly following an exercise in the instructor’s manual that had students write the name “Jesus” in large letters on a piece of paper, put the paper on the floor, face up, and after a brief period, tell them to step on the paper.

The exercise was part of a chapter dealing with the power of certain words. One student, a junior named Ryan Rotelas, said he refused to participate.

While the university said Rotelas was never punished for his refusal, the student’s lawyer said school officials told Rotelas he would be suspended.

FAU officials have apologized and said the student will not be punished. They also stated the exercise will not be assigned again.

Gov. Rick Scott wants a detailed report from state university system Chancellor Frank Brogan regarding the incident.

“Whether the student was reprimanded or whether an apology was given is in many ways (inconsequential) to the larger issue of a professor’s poor judgment,” Scott stated in a letter to Brogan. “The professor’s lesson was offensive, and even intolerant, to Christians and those of all faiths who deserve to be respected as Americans entitled to religious freedom.”

Meanwhile, the controversy has prompted the Church of All Nations in Boca Raton to plan a march in response, according to Reverend Mark Boykin.

Reverend Boykin is still fuming over what the FAU student was asked to do in class.

“To write the name of Jesus on a piece of paper, and then to stop and contemplate what they were doing. And then to stomp on it,” says Rev. Boykin.  “We find this to be unconscionable, unprofessional and completely unacceptable.”

This comes despite repeated apologies from FAU leaders.

“We don’t plan to use this exercise again, we apologize to everyone who felt it was too sensitive we recognize that,” says Dr. Charles Brown, Senior Vice President of Student Affairs at FAU.

Dr. Brown says Rotelas was never up for punishment for refusing to step on a piece of paper with Jesus’ names on it. A lawyer for Rotelas says otherwise.

“He met with the school officials about it and was informed of his suspension,” says Hiram Sasser, with the Liberty Institute.

That’s when Sasser says FAU did an about face.

“Their first mistake was backing the professor and the assignment. But then they found out most of America didn’t agree with them,” says Sasser.

Rotelas is back in class, but with a different instructor. He claimed “victory” Tuesday on his Facebook page once the university decided he wouldn’t be punished.

The only things missing are the horns

From where I am sitting, it is immaterial how profusely FAU apologizes to Mr. Rotelas at this point, as any apology from the school would ring hollow now.

It is the mentality of the instructor involved, the offensive nature of the assignment in question, and the willingness of those in a position of authority to initially rush to its defense that I find troubling.

I cannot say whether Gov. Scott’s actions are merely political theater, or that he genuinely plans to get to the bottom of the heinous actions on the part of the FAU faculty.

Personally, I hope these people are made examples of, because this sort of thing is becoming far too common on the campuses of American colleges and universities.

To me, this incident rises above mere anti-Christian bigotry, and is very close to meeting what I would define as persecution.

We are not yet one lifetime beyond seeing what religious persecution left unchallenged can ultimately lead to, and Christians would do well to heed that lesson, as three million of them died right along with the Jews in the Hitlerite death camps.

And please spare me the “That could never happen here in ‘civilized’ America” nonsense.

After all, Germany was a civilized nation, too.

Will Dems Pay for Passing Obamacare in 2014?

Disaster for Dems

ObamaCare & the 2014 vote

Democrats hope to retake the House of Representatives in next year’s elections. They won’t — and they’ll have themselves to blame, because 2014 is when ObamaCare kicks in.

With a vengeance.

The authors of the Obama health law postponed the pain until after the 2012 election. Some popular provisions went into effect immediately, such as allowing children to stay on their parent’s plan until age 26. And the White House granted 1,472 waivers to various companies and unions, exempting them from insurance reforms so they wouldn’t drop coverage for employees and members before the presidential contest.

Kiss of death: ObamaCare’s disastrous impact means Nancy Pelosi, here being greeted by the president last year, won’t be speaker again soon.

Kiss of death: ObamaCare’s disastrous impact means Nancy Pelosi, here being greeted by the president last year, won’t be speaker again soon.

Yet a majority of voters on Election Day still opposed the health law (though, obviously, it wasn’t the deciding issue in the presidential race). And opinion will only sour more as the law takes full force starting in January.

People in their 20s and 30s will be clobbered — their health-insurance premiums will double (or more), insurers report. Nineteen percent of the president’s 2012 voters came from this age group. The biggest problem: The Obama law forces insurers to charge young, healthy people more to cover the cost of insuring the middle-aged and those with pre-existing conditions.

Middle-aged folks will benefit somewhat from overcharging the young, but the law’s mandatory benefits package and its billions in new taxes on insurers will drive up costs enough that overall premiums for a family of five will start at $20,000 (before subsidies, if any). Oh — and that doesn’t count the penalty for each smoker, roughly $3,000 a head.

(Subsidies may help some people cover sky-high premiums, though not the smoking penalty — but the letter of the law makes those subsidies unavailable in many states. The federal courts will eventually decide the issue.)

Many workers in industries such as retail, hospitality and home care will lose on-the-job health coverage, forecasts the ADP Research Institute — and many will also be demoted to part-time status because of ObamaCare.

Why? The president’s health law mandates that all employers with 50 or more full-time workers provide its “essential benefit package” if they offer insurance — and that package costs about twice what these industries now offer. Many employers will drop coverage, and pay the (smaller) fine; others will try to avoid that 50-employee limit by using more people part-time.

Even the government’s actuaries admit fewer people will get coverage at work after the employer mandate goes into effect than if the law had not passed.

You will find the rest of the article at this link.

Obamacare

I am praying Betsy McCaughey is right, as it appears the current congress cannot bring itself to even throw a speed bump in front of Obama’s health care plan from Hell. Okay, it really is not Obama’s plan, as it was written many moons ago and has been sitting in a rusty file cabinet ever since, but he will be forever associated with it.

There is just one teeny, tiny problem, though, as filling out an Obamacare application will include an opportunity to register to vote.

That could end up being a double edged sword given the low-information electorate we now have in this country.

And do not even get me started on the potential for voter fraud.

Washington State Senate to Vote on Abortion Insurance Mandate

Washington state weighs first-in-the-nation abortion insurance mandate

Published March 24, 2013  / Associated Press

In 1970, Washington became the first — and remains the only — state in the country to legalize elective abortions by a popular vote.

A generation later, and 40 years removed from the landmark United States Supreme Court Roe v. Wade ruling that extended abortion access nationwide, Washington is once again poised to stand out.

With 21 states having adopted bans or severe restrictions on insurance companies from paying for abortions, Washington is alone in seriously considering legislation mandating the opposite.

The Reproductive Parity Act, as supporters call it, would require insurers in Washington state who cover maternity care — which all insurers must do — to also pay for abortions.

The bill passed the state House earlier this month by a vote of 53-43, though it faces an uncertain future in the Senate. A similar bill in the New York state Assembly has been introduced each session for over a decade but has never received a public hearing.

“This is a core value for Washingtonians,” said Melanie Smith, a lobbyist for NARAL Pro-Choice Washington. “We should protect it while we still have it and not leave access to basic health care up to an insurance company.”

The proximate cause of Washington state’s measure is the federal Affordable Care Act. Thanks to language placed in it to assuage anti-abortion congressional Democrats, insurers selling their plans on the state exchanges taking effect next year will have to segregate the premiums they collect for abortion coverage.

You will find the rest of the story here.

I hope this idiocy fails to pass, but given that it is Washington state, I have a sick feeling that it will.

I also cannot ignore the irony that Obamacare is going to pay for the murder of unborn children that will not even get a chance at productive lives, yet refuse care for the elderly, most of which have led productive lives and contributed much to this nation, simply because it is considered to be too expensive.

We have now reached the point where government bureaucrats, who have had no medical training outside of applying a band-aid and popping pills, will be deciding who among us lives or dies.

This is not really America anymore, and I cannot help but wonder just when our plug is going to be pulled for good.

Only nine republicans defected.

It is now abundantly clear to me that if this country has any chance at all at survival (and I am seeing less and less to be optimistic about with each passing day), the Republican Party, as currently structured, is not going to be the reason.

I am almost at the point of despair.

May God help us.

And we’re going to fix this in November of 2014?

Have You Bought Your ‘Abornament’ Yet?

By Matt Vespa | December 20, 2012 | 15:55

Yes, abortion rights activists have reached a new level of depravity. Apparently, as everyone indulges in the holiday spirit, the pro-choice camp decided to create abortion ornaments – or ‘abornaments’ – to be part of the commemoration of the birth of Christ. The fact that pro-choice Americans threw this in the face of those who practice religion, or hold pro-life beliefs, is offensive in the extreme. Steven Ertelt of LifeNews wrote on December 19:

The pro-life group Life Dynamics has been highlighting so-called “Abornaments” that pro-abortion activists are promoting. They are sharing the images of the sacrilegious ornaments on the popular image sharing web site Pinterest.

Most of the so-called Christmas ornaments pictured involve the manipulation and desecration of plastic fetal models depicting unborn children at various stage of development before birth.

“It’s that time of year again for ABORNAMENTS! Every year, the pro-choice community celebrates abortion at Christmas by selling Abornaments Anyone disgusted? We are,” the pro-life group says. “What were they thinking?”

That’s a good question.

On This Day in 1941

The following is an adaptation of a previous post concerning the tragic events that took place on December 07, 1941. The video at bottom is a new addition:

President Roosevelt’s speech to the nation:

Seventy-one years ago today, America saw a great evil and, in near unison, rose up and removed that evil’s shadow from the face of the Earth.

That was nearly a lifetime ago, and this was a very different America.

We shall never see the likes of that America again.
