Nellie Gray, founder of the annual March for Life in Washington, D.C. and passionate fighter and warrior for the sanctity of life, passed away on August 13, 2012 at the age of 86.
She was a native of Big Spring, Texas, serving in the Women’s Army Corps in World War II. She earned a Master’s Degree in economics and became an Attorney, working for approximately 30 years for the State Department and the Labor Department.
In 1974, she started the March for Life and was its fearless leader Every year in January on the anniversary date of the Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision (abomination!), allowng abortion on demand, the killing of innocent children on demand, the March for Life was held in Washington, D.C.
Nellie was a contemporary St. Joan of Arc, battling with intense devotion for the unborn. She was an important voice for these innocent little children having their lives taken from them by abortion on demand. Father Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, said that Nellie was a “tireless warrior for the unborn.”
I eagerly watched the March for Life on the Eternal Word Television Network (EWTN), the international Catholic television station, and I so enjoyed listening to her amazing speeches, always logical, passionate, fierce and strong. Indeed and in fact, thousands of people showed up annually for the March for Life; in 2012, approximately 400,000 people participated. The hostile news media regularly ignored the March or did not set out clearly how significant it was given the thousands of people that attended it, with its purpose to visually remind all Americans of the horrible and unconscienable actions of the abortion industry in the mass killing of children, the mass wounding of mothers, fathers, - families.
So, Nellie, I have sung for you today, in my living room, on my twelve-string guitar, the beautiful “Song of Farewell” which I have regularly played at many Catholic Funerals, while the casket is being blessed:
“May the choirs of angels come to greet you, May they speed you to paradise. May the Lord enfold you in His mercy. May you find eternal life.”
Much Love To You Nellie! We are going on with the fight for life and we thank you for your incredible example! We must choose Life in November of 2012, not death, and oust this abortion advocate of a President and his administration. Please intercede to Our Lord for us and help us!

What a brave woman, to be a government employee and take the stance she did! A great example for us. Thank you, Nellie.
I never knew about Nellie Gray. Thank you, Joan, for telling us about her. What a sad commentary on our times that we know all about Margaret Sanger, eugenicist and founder of the abortion mill Planned Parenthood, but not about Nellie Gray. Wikipedia’s entry on Gray doesn’t even fill a page.
Thank you for informing us about Nellie and how remarkable she was. I love the Song of Farewell. That is very special.
Amazing Grace, how sweet it is, and so was she, AMEN
Maybe the troll is pro-abortion and does not respect Nellie as a fighter for life. Who knows. . .I agree, what a useless waste of time. Such ignorance simply motivates me to fight harder and to pray harder!
