Feisty Sloppy Joes

Ingredients

1 lb. ground round; 2 large diced onions; 1 diced green pepper; 2 tsp. of salt; liberal amount of freshly ground pepper; 1/2 cup of ketchup; 3 tsp. of hot sauce; 2 tbsp. of brown sugar; 1 tbsp. of horseradish mustard.

Brown the ground round until it is no longer pink.  Season the meat with salt and pepper.  Add the diced onions and green pepper to the meat and fry on low heat so you get good carmelization and release of flavor from the onions and pepper.  In a separate bowl, whisk the ketchup, the brown sugar, the hot sauce and the mustard.  Add this sauce to the meat mixture.  Simmer for 15 minutes (low heat).  Serve on some good quality hamburger buns with a nice big dill pickle.

Enjoy!  My husband loved it!  He, thankfully, is my professional taster on the food I turn out and he gave me his stamp of approval!

  2. Sure beats the can method! Thanks for sharing

  3. I’m definitely trying this next week!

  4. I hope you all enjoy it! And I can assure you, it “sure beats the can method!” I gave my husband two leftover Sloppy Joes’ in his lunch the next day, and he said it tasted even better.

    • WHO is the perverse clown who put the “thumbs down” on this GREAT version of a fav food? Any stand-up heroes out there, or are you just recent slime? I’ve tried making this any number of times, but Joan’s aced it by making it classically simple and clear. And I LOVE the part about carmelisation of the onions and green peppers, ALWAYS underdone for me before. Many, many thanks for this, which I’ll serve ASAP!

  5. Thank you, Joan, for this easy and delicious recipe! I’ve tasted Joan’s cooking and can personally testify to its scrumptiousness. :D

    • Thank you Dr. Eowyn. I wish you were in my kitchen today. I would prepare for you and my husband spicy shrimp cocktails!

  6. Joan, you’ve made soooo hungry…. and it’s not even noon yet!

  7. Next time I get stormed out of grilling burgers, I’ll make this instead. :-)

  11. I just sent this to my USA re-posting friends who appreciate great food, so it will be viral by next week.

  12. Made this for dinner tonight – it was soooo yummy! I served with pickles and some shoestring french fries. Have plenty leftover for tomorrow for lunch – yay!

I added just a tad more horseradish to cut down on the sweetness and only 1 diced onion. I’m going to make this again next week!

  13. Hey, I am so glad you all liked this recipe. I am so honored and pleased! As to the trolls that put their thumbs down, they are just simply stupid and do not know how to enjoy life! Or, they just don’t like me! That is just fine by me!
