I confidently predict s/he will live to an amazing age, IF s/he can stay awake in times of crisis! Seriously, this has been THE classic problem w/Friends Meeting for Worship, most notable in our senior ones, such as mine….
Those poor Persians… their noses are so small they can’t get enough oxygen to stay awake! Our 9 and 15 year old Persians sleep more than any cats I’ve ever seen…
I’ve had Persian cats ever since I adopted a blue (grey) female abandoned by her owner when I was still in grad school. My present “Peekaboo” is my 9th Persian. All of them breathe normally, don’t sleep all the time, and behave just as energetically as non-Persians. Typical of the breed, “Peekaboo” is a one-woman cat. That’s why when they are abandoned or lost their owners, the Persian’s heart and spirit are broken.
If your Persians are lethargic, I suggest you ask your vet about getting them a “nose job.”
Just saw this… We adopted these two just about 7 months ago from a lady who goes to our vet and couldn’t afford them. We’ve never had Persians before, and don’t have much to go on… They been going to our vet since they were kittens, and he thinks they are in good shape, so it must just be our perceptions… and the incredibly weird noises they make when they’re sleeping! Do they all do that? Have you ever noticed if they are more anxious than other cat breeds? The 15 y.o. is being bullied by the 2 y.o. Maine Coon and has quit using the litter box. We’re caging him to try and retrain him to the box, but no progress after more than a month. We ever tried tranking him to calm him down, and he still poops in the kitchen if we let him out too long… The 8 y.o. also poops in the bathtub once in a while… Any thoughts?
I haven’t found Persians to be more anxious than other feline breeds, nor do they make “incredibly weird noises” when they sleep. In fact, mine don’t make any noises when they sleep, except for one who occasionally gently snored, which was incredibly cute. As for litter box issues, some cats don’t like the smell of urine and poop of another cat in the box. The standard advice is to put out as many litter boxes as the number of cats in the household. Being bullied by another cat definitely will make the 15 y.o. Persian nervous, anxious, and unhappy.
Litter box issues are one of the top reasons why owners give up on their cats. It’s a tough problem to diagnose and solve. You might try contacting the lady who was the previous owner and find out what the personalities of the two Persians are like. Bless you for adopting them.

Thank you, as now I “get it”! One wonders why humans would develop such a breed, especially if we wanted animal companions.
