Yesterday, hrmfc — FOTM’s beloved long time reader and commenter — participated in a Memorial Day Celebration in Ocean City, Maryland, and took these amazing photos.
The event was sponsored by Ocean City but coordinated with a group of Marines.
hrmfc writes:
“I couldn’t get a panoramic shot because I was holding the flag, which weighed 800 pounds! There were at least 250 people there. Most were holding the flag but before we unfurled it we required others to be near so they could go under it to keep it from touching the ground.
When the flag was completely unfurled, we sang The Star Spangled Banner and God Bless America. It was a memorable experience and a good way to honor our fallen countrymen.”
Here’s a stunning bird’s eye view of the flag:
Thank you, hrmfc, for sharing these pics with us!

Wow! That must have been difficult but what a Beautiful result and what a Great experience! Thank You!
Thank you, Dr. Eowyn! It was a wonderful experience. The weight was bearable because it was balanced on so many shoulders. Though the beach is always windy, we were fortunate that the wind was pretty mild. I felt honored to be a participant.
Thank you for letting us post those stunning photos!
Ya know, I’m just..uh, ya know…when people unfurl a flag this size, part of me is – I love the flag and all and don’t want to sully its place in our history, but, there’s just this part of me that is uncomfortable with such a display – it just calls forth an unthinking nationalistic zeal. Is this really necessary?
(sarcasm alert)
I found a little video clip somebody just posted on Youtube!
What a great way to celebrate the day! Hope that flag was Made in the USA LOL
How cool is that! Bet it was a lot of fun!
Thanks for posting the video clip.!
The Marines present said there were around three flags like this in the US.
cool nice big flag… i on the other hand had a bunch of little flags planted around the beer garden where i work. i had raided the back room of my local legion hall and grabbed some flags. sometimes you just have to remind some people what memorial day is celebrated for.
Hand Salute….
