Many people have rightly questioned over time – how do we know if December 25th is really the birthday of Jesus Christ? We don’t. But we do know when His cousin – John the Baptist was born. But let’s start at the beginning of it all.
In the 14th century b.c., there was an extremely pagan and savage winter solstice celebration known to the Romans as – Saturnalia.
By the beginning of December, writes Columella, the farmer should have finished his autumn planting (De Re Rustica, III.14). Now, at the time of the winter solstice (December 25 in the Julian calendar), Saturnus, the god of seed and sowing, was honored with a festival. The Saturnalia officially was celebrated on December 17 (XVI Kal. Jan.) and, in Cicero’s time, lasted seven days, from December 17-23. Augustus limited the holiday to three days, so the civil courts would not have to be closed any longer than necessary, and Caligula extended it to five (Suetonius, XVII; Cassius Dio, LIX.6), which Claudius restored after it had been abolished (Dio, LX.25). Still, everyone seems to have continued to celebrate for a full week, extended, says Macrobius (I.10.24), by celebration of the Sigillaria, so named for the small earthenware figurines that were sold then.
Read U. of Chicago article here.
Saturnalia and it’s antecedents can be singularly identified as sun worship. In the Babylonian Empire, Tammuz was similar to the Roman god, Saturn. Almost identical in practice, the sun worshipers burned ritual fires, danced naked, and prayed to evergreen trees. [Hence the evergreen laurel wreath on Caesar's head.]
. . . Saturnalia was the most vile, immoral, feast that ever disgraced Rome. It was a season of license, revelry prevailed, and the entire city wantonly indulged in the filthiest sorts of immorality imaginable. [ The Shocking Truth About Christmas, Dr. Russell K. Tardo]
That explains how the date was arrived at, but what about the tree? Ever since being expelled from the Garden of Eden, man has been trying to get back to the Tree of Life.
- Spanish explorers discovered that Mayans of Mexico revered the cypress tree and attached offerings of teeth and locks of hair to its boughs.
- In China, red banners with words of praise and thanksgiving printed on them adorned certain trees.
- In Finland, the Lapps collected samples of all the foods eaten at the solstice feast, put them in a small birch trough, and then placed the vessel into the branches in a special pine tree.
- Druids tied apples to the oak and fir tree during the solstice.
- In the Roman Saturnalia, holly leaves with red berries could dispel the ‘evil eye’, while mistletoe was believed to promote fertility.
- Many Native American Tribes believed that evergreen trees had ‘spirits.’
The merger between the winter solstice celebrations and the birth of Christ did not become official until A.D. 375. It was the result of trying to Christianize new and potential Christian converts, who were most unwilling to give up their parties and rituals. In a sort of “If you can’t beat em, join em ,” effort, what was once known as Natilis Solis Invictior [ the Birthday of the Unconquerable Sun] became the Birthday of Jesus Christ.
The church attempted to subvert pagan practices by attaching them to church activities, in a process known as syncretism. The decorated Christmas tree is traced to Martin Luther, who first attached small candles and called it a “Paradise Tree.” Another reference to the Tree of Life.

Many devout, Bible believing Christians look at what has become ‘Christmas,’ and have a strong feeling that something is wrong. With the garish materialism, now even violence, in the pursuit of “Christmas cheer” – what’s a Christian to do?
The answer to that is in the Bible. Praise God. The Book of Luke gives the ultra important outline to us. It is known that Jesus was conceived by Mary of the Holy Ghost, during her cousin Elizabeth’s sixth month of pregnancy with John. As John was conceived in June – that means our Lord was conceived in December – and that He was born nine months later, approximately September 29th. The Feast of Trumpets. This is so hugely significant, it is beyond astonishment. And as all ancient Jews considered a baby to be nine months old at birth – Christians today may well celebrate the conception of Christ – this incredible, miraculous event.
For unto us a Child is born, unto to us a Son is given; and the government shall be upon His shoulder; and His name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The Mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. Of the increase of His government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgement and justice from henceforth even for ever. Isaiah 9: 6-7
If you choose to celebrate the Lord’s earthly arrival over the next few weeks, please keep Him as the center of your Holiday. Make the Nativity the focus of your decorations, not the tree. Drunken Christmas parties are a throw-back to Saturnalia, and are identical in practice and motivation. Remember – it’s all about Him. . .
For in in depth study of the significance of the dates [not for the faint of heart nor short attention spanned] go here. Worth it!

“In the history of the world, nothing has been the catalyst of more grief, hatred, war, and crime than religion. Religion allows a person to hate, kill, torture, or steal, while allowing him to recuse himself of all blame. Religion causes people to break the laws of ethics and morality in the name of a god.” (http://atheists.org/religion)

“Religious bondage shackles and debilitates the mind and unfits it for every noble enterprise.” – James Madison
“Millions of innocent men, women and children, since the introduction of Christianity, have been burnt, tortured, fined, imprisoned; yet we have not advanced one inch towards uniformity. What has been the effect of coercion? To make half the world fools, and the other half hypocrites.” ~ Thomas Jefferson
“The day will come when the mystical generation of Jesus, by the supreme being as his father in the womb of a virgin, will be classed with the fable of the generation of Minerva in the brain of Jupiter.” ~ Thomas Jefferson wrote, in a letter to John Adams (April 11, 1823)
“The Christian god is a three-headed monster, cruel, vengeful and capricious. If one wishes to know more of this raging, three-headed beast-like god, one only needs to look at the caliber of people who say they serve him. They are always of two classes: fools and hypocrites.” ~ Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826)

“As the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion; as it has in itself no character of enmity against the laws, religion, or tranquillity, of Mussulmen; and, as the said States never entered into any war, or act of hostility against any Mahometan nation, it is declared by the parties, that no pretext arising from religious opinions, shall ever produce an interruption of the harmony existing between the two countries.”

What does your comment have to do with the pure, Biblical Christianity I am trying to encourage and educate about with this post? Would you like me to post some quotes to refute yours – from the Word of God?
“22 But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.
23 For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass:
24 For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was.
25 But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.
26 If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man’s religion is vain.
27 Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.”
James 1: 22-27
“In the history of the world, nothing has been the catalyst of more grief, hatred, war, and crime than religion. Religion allows a person to hate, kill, torture, or steal, while allowing him to recuse himself of all blame. Religion causes people to break the laws of ethics and morality in the name of a god.”
Funny the athiests should use that, because it includes athiestic Marxist-Leninist delusion too.
cp,
Your extremely long and tedious comment has NOTHING to do with Sagebrush’s post. You’re on your own little obsessive trip. You don’t get to hijack this post. Go write your own blog. Be gone.

Love that graphic!
Love your post, Sage. It explains a lot why Christmas has become increasingly pagan and awash in consumerism and materialism.
Coincidentally (or maybe not), Sept. 29 is the Feastday of the Archangel St. Michael (my favorite saint – the word “saint” simply means “holy”) in the Catholic Church, which the Church now recognizes as the Feastday of all the Archangels.
Eowyn, I don’t think it’s coincidence! Not only the Feast of Archangels – but to those who spend a lot of time studying such things – it is also believed to be the date of the Rapture of the Church!
Simply amazing. . . .
Thank you Sage and Eowyn. May we find the spirit of Christmas in the gospels of the bible. May we find the love of Christmas in the love for our fellow men. May we find peace within our selves as our souls search for the Christ child. May the Christmas star shine upon us so that we can be light for others living in darkness. Don’t hide your faith, live it. Don’t deny your faith, glow with it. The spirit of Christmas lives within me. It is not wrapped up in the presents for my loved ones. It is not baked in the dozens of Christmas cookies . It is not glittery like the ornaments hanging on my tree. The gift of the Christ child, the humility of Mary, the guidance of St. Joseph are the tenets of my childhood, the framework of my church, the core of my celebrations. Keep Christ in Christmas!
There is nowhere in the gospels, the celebration of Jesus’s birth except for the Magi following the star. No one celebrated it after he died. Even the deciples based their dating on the Jewish holy Feast Days. Christ’s birth coincided with the Fall solstice, when shepherds and farmers were gathering up the fruits of their fields..which makes it around the end of October.
JESUS IS THE REASON FOR THE SEASON!!!!!!!!!
Amen you’ll.
This quotation is frequently seen on the World Wide Web, attributed to Thomas Jefferson: “The Christian god can easily be pictured as virtually the same god as the many ancient gods of past civilizations. The Christian god is a three headed monster; cruel, vengeful and capricious. If one wishes to know more of this raging, three headed beast-like god, one only needs to look at the caliber of people who say they serve him. They are always of two classes: fools and hypocrites.”[1] This quotation has not been found in any writings of Thomas Jefferson…

so easy to debunk, we do have the http://WWW…and I just looked up one quote…
Thanks for the mini-history lesson sage…
Kheta – these trolls often come on with hooey, such as you so kindly have exposed for us. Certainly – George Washington was a devout Christian – who railed against the corrupt and powerful Church of England. Thomas Paine, on the other hand, was to put it mildly – not of the Lord.
Has anyone welcomed you to the fellowship? I don’t think I have, so here is my belated, and warmest welcome to our fellowship.

Thank you sage, I love this site and save it for last, so I can savor it…
ps How do I get rid of the green lizard icon?
I think you need to go to wordpress.com and set up an account for yourself. Then you can select your own gravatar.
Thanks sage…
You’re welcome. Your new gravatar is a huge improvement over the “green lizard.” LOL
Ooooh, psycadelic. I like it
Hello again. I really wanted to congratulate you on the amazing revelation that the ancient Jews considered that a child was nine months old at birth. This is a powerful witness for pro lifers, if it were taught in the schools as well as in the church regularly, then so much confusion about when the embryo is actually a “person” would be dispelled. Should it be true that the majority of our Congress are pro Israel then should it not be expressed constantly on Capital Hill whenever the endless discussions on abortion are happening? Merry Christmas to everyone in advance.
Thank you, Alice. It is interesting to think about – that the same Hebrew word – “yeled” – was used in the Old Testament – to describe a teenager or young child, as was used to describe the infant still in the womb. There was no recognized difference.
How tragic, that now Israel is under the influence of Rabbinic/ Talmudic/ satanic Judaism, that even an infant a month old now, is not considered “fully human.” This has upset many Jews, as they feel that they are not even allowed to grieve over a miscarriage, or stillbirth. This is what happens when “extra-Biblical” books, are allowed to super-cede and corrupt the pure Word of God.

Come quickly, Lord Jesus.
