If You’re Feeling Sorry for Yourself…

Joseph sent me this video, which we’ve posted 5 months ago. It’s worth a repeat.

…………………..

…watch this.

Then get down on your knees and thank God for what you have.

His name is Nick Vujicic.

The eldest child of a Serbian family in Melbourne, Australia, Vujicic (pronounced ‘Vooy-ee-chich’) was born in 1982 with Tetra-amelia syndrome, a rare disorder characterized by the absence of all four limbs.

Born limbless — legless and missing both arms at shoulder level — Vujicic had feet that were toeless except for two toes on one foot. Initially, his parents were devastated, though the baby was otherwise healthy.

Originally prohibited by Victoria state law from attending a mainstream school because of his physical disability, even though he was not mentally impaired, Vujicic became one of the first disabled students integrated into a mainstream school, once the laws changed.

Vujicic was bullied at school and grew depressed. When he was 8, he began thinking of suicide. At age 10, he tried to drown himself, but did not go through with it out of love for his parents.

He prayed for arms and legs. But sometimes our prayers are answered, though not exactly what we had prayed for.

A key turning point came when his mother showed him a newspaper article about a man dealing with a severe disability. Vujicic realized he wasn’t unique in his struggles and gradually accepted his own physical disability.

Vujicic began to master the daily tasks of life — how to comb his hair, brush his teeth, get a glass of water, answer the phone, and shave. He learned to write, type, and use a computer using the two toes on his left foot. He learned to throw tennis balls and play drum pedals. He became grateful for his life.

In 7th grade, he was elected captain of his school and worked with the student council on fund-raising events for local charities and disability campaigns. When he was 17, he started giving talks at his prayer group. At age 21, he graduated from Griffith University with a double major in Accounting and Financial Planning.

Vujicic became a preacher and motivational speaker to inspire others with his life and accomplishments. He founded a non-profit organization, Life Without Limbs. He travels internationally and has spoken before over three million people — to corporate groups, congregations and schools — in more than 24 countries on five continents.

Vujicic promotes his work through television shows and through his writing. His first book, Life Without Limits: Inspiration for a Ridiculously Good Life (Random House, 2010) was published in 2010. He has a motivational DVD, Life’s Greater Purpose, a short documentary filmed in 2005 highlighting his home life and regular activities, and a DVD for young people titled: No Arms, No Legs, No Worries: Youth Version.

In 2005 Vujicic was nominated for the “Young Australian of the Year” Award. He currently lives in California.

Here’s his website.

H/t my dear friend Bill.

  1. I know I’ve seen this before. He is amazing. Quit yer bitchen and enjoy while you can.

  2. What an amazing individual! His attitude is one of honoring oneself as a gift of God, and no matter what the physical, and mental, and outside forces that would have your inner self be traumatized to nearly death itself – God has made “each and everyone of us” a special gift that He loves so very much! Vujicic is an absolutely inspirational blessing, and proof that when we find ourselves whining to God about, well, anything.. then God has Vujicic as a wonderful gift to inspire, among all the other wonderful gifts He gives us to help us recognize His unconditional love for each of us. What a great thing it is for Vujicic to speak to these young people, who are at a critical point in life, and God blesses them all through this man! :)

  3. I’ll bet he wakes every day with a prayer of thanks that he’s alive,,,
Like Steve, I’ve seen this man before,,, and this old man had tears in his eyes, watching him,,, quite an inspiration to all humankind,,,
So very few know how truly blessed they are~!

  4. Thanks! I needed that!

  5. Wow…what an inspiration!!

  6. I have been in constant pain for quite a few years. It’s bad enough that I finally went to a pain doctor in January of this year and was placed on percocet. I take just enough to be able to do my chores, but not really enough to stop the pain entirely. That being said, for the first time this morning, as I was drinking my first cup of coffee I thought, oh boy another day of pain. I am usually upbeat, but at times I do slip. This video came to me at the best time possible. He is such an inspiration and but for the grace of God, there go I…

Thanks so much Eowyn for the timely reminder that we are all in this together, no matter what we have to work with…

    Much love, Kheta

    • Kheta,

So sorry you are in constant pain. Glad this post helps. My best friend, Joan (of FOTM’s “Joan’s Kitchen”), is also in constant terrible pain — from degenerative disk disease, osteoarthritis, fibromyalgia. She bears all her suffering with her faith and by offering it as redemptive suffering to Jesus.

      Sending you a virtual hug.

May the peace and love of Christ be with you,

      Eowyn

      • Thank you Eowyn, ghee I didn’t say that to get sympathy, just to put perspective on the timing of your post. I kinda felt that it was posted for me…;-)

    • Kheta, I too live in constant pain. Bad accident and 11-12 surgeries later. Sorry I lost count. You know I bitch and moan till I see some poor guy in a wheelchair, and thank God at least I can walk. I try and teach my Son that too. I always try and point out someone with way more probs then us and remind him Thank God everyday you can walk, jump, whatever.
I know pain is no fun, but you kind of get used to it. Sorry for your pain.

      • Well Steve, your surgery count has me beat.
Yes, one does get use to the pain, I guess I can call it my “little friend”, it’s always there for me ;-)
        Sorry you have it too…

        • Kheta, sorry for yours as well. Just remember it could always be worse.
Everything else seems to be working, so I guess we’re pretty lucky.
And then if need be there are always the goofy pills..LOL
          Steve

    • Kheta – So many share your pain.. There probably isn’t one here who can’t relate to you on some level. :( But I just want you to know, the good Lord is always there, and He knows the suffering we/you go through and He does care, and I will be lifing you up in my prayers for by His almighty hand and grace we can be helped through it day to day – and He is not beyond the miracle of complete healing :) …. Praying for you!

  7. Thank you, Dr. Eowyn and Bill, for this most inspirational post! Vujicic is an example to us of the opposite of victimhood! Look how much good he has accomplished as a result of his disabilities! Wonderful!

Kheta, I send you my very best regards and I will offer my day to you to Our Lord asking Him to help you and guide you. Just look at the Crucifix and Jesus will help you bear your pain! I also say this prayer, “I praise you, dear God, in all things and situations; I thank you, dear God, in all things and situations; I will live in the mystery of the Cross; and, I will live in the present!”

God bless you and may Our Blessed Mother take care of you, as well as the angels and the Saints, our Church Triumphant!

  8. Steve, and Kheta Amenti ,,, God works his Miracles in so many different ways,,, I long ago learned NEVER to say, “God doesn’t do things that way~!”, I am NOT in His place~!,,, I figure He can do whatever He pleases, in His own way, and for His own purposes,,, even if it’s to teach us the truth, ” I complained I had no shoes, until I met a man who had no feet~! ”
Those of us who live in constant pain can still enjoy the sunrise, the sunset, and the beauty, freedom and innocence of a child’s laughter,,,
And we can be content, that we do what we do, with what we have,,,
My Love and Prayers to you , and also to Dr Eowyn’s precious friend, Joan of “Joan’s Kitchen”,,, and all others who have issues, one or the other~!

  9. Some day –

“And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be anymore pain: for the former things are passed away.

And He that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new. And He said unto me, Write; for these Words are True and Faithful.”
    Revelation 21: 4-5

    • Sage – Hallelujah and AMEN! .. We will all be perfected in every way, spotless and blemish free, pain free, and tear free… Thank you Jesus!

  10. And to think I bitch and moan when I twist an ankle.

    -Dave
