No More National Anthem

Goshen College in Indiana is a private college that has ties to the Mennonite Church which is committed to nonviolence. One of their core values is to serve as “Compassionate Peacemakers”:

As Christian peacemakers, we embrace “shalom” – the peace that God intends for humanity. We are committed to build the “peaceable kingdom” by practicing loving kindness, restoring justice, practicing anti-racism, loving our enemies and advocating for the dispossessed. We renounce the oppressive, violent destructive powers of this world – and are willing to live our lives as examples of God’s peace.

So committed they are to nonviolence that they will not play the National Anthem during sporting events. From the official statement, “The Board expressed a strong commitment to advancing with President James E. Brenneman the vision for Goshen College to be an influential leader in liberal arts education with a growing capacity to serve a theologically, politically, racially and ethnically diverse constituency both within and beyond the Mennonite church. The Board concluded that continuing to play the national anthem compromised the ability of college constituents to advance the vision together.”

Carlos Romero, executive director of the Mennonite Education Agency and an ex-officio member of the Board, affirmed the decision and the message he said it will communicate to the college’s constituents, Mennonite Church USA members and other people of faith. “Goshen College has been and remains a ministry of Mennonite Church USA with an enduring peace tradition,” Romero said. “The Board’s decision reflects a belief that faith and honoring country can co-exist without disturbing higher allegiances to God and that Goshen College will become increasingly diverse and will welcome diverse viewpoints.”

Goshen College had not played the Star-Spangled Banner prior to sporting events, since beginning to participate in intercollegiate athletics in 1957, although it was never officially banned from campus. The U.S. tradition of performing the national anthem before baseball games began during World War II. In January 2010, the Goshen College President’s Council, led by President Brenneman, decided to allow the college’s Athletic Department to play an instrumental version of the national anthem prior to some sporting events beginning that spring.

While I respect a private college’s decision to support peace, we must face the truths of the world.  Had we not had the courage to battle evil during World War II, we may all be speaking German today.

  1. I commented on this on weasel zippers,Chris Christie needs to give Mitch Daniels some lessons on backbone. Where is he? Indiana is being tromped on.

    • Tina – I know for a fact that Rick Warren’s ‘Purpose Driven’ garbage has taken over some Mennonite communities. If you know anything about his supposed “peace plan,” it is not patriotic – but rather – globalist. I pray that’s not the case at Goshen College – but it sounds like it. It raises the hair on the back of my neck.

      It’s all about world P.E.A.C.E.

      p.s. We could all use a Chris Christie… :(

      • Sage,I feel like a fool. I bought Rick Warrens book. Your words always ring so true, thankyou. Talk about Set Up and Sold Out.

        • Tina – I speak from personal experience. A group of us were forced out of our church about eight years ago because of our refusal to jump on the bandwagon. Many of my good friends, who are NOT fools, were deceived into following this movement.

You could never, under any circumstances, be called a fool – just call it temporary blindness – and use what you know to help others to see the truth!!!

  2. So, “higher allegiances to God” are preserved by allowing ungodly, anti-Christian/anti-Jehovah (or anti-any-god-but-Allah, at least) and/or non-patriotic stuff instead?

    • It just seemed like they were saying “satanists, jihadists and traitors are God’s children, too” in a typical left/libtard “non-judgmental” rap that supports anything BUT goodness.

Can’t the Devil quotes scripture and twist it to his purposes?

      • Anon – the evil one knows the Book backwards and forwards. And since he can not create anything himself – he corrupts EVERYTHING! I like to think of him as a juvenile delinquent with – supernatural powers!!!!!!

  3. Anon, would not know what to do without you!

  4. Members of our military and police, take note:

“If Goshen College ever is attacked, please leave them alone. Afterall, they are committed to ‘non violence’ and will not approve or appreciate your use of firearms to defend their lives and property.”

What’s happening to Indiana? This is the same state whose Supreme Court recently overruled the 4th Amendment.

    • It sorta reminds me of the old saying about a Conservative is but a liberal who was just mugged. Something like that. So if an attacker comes into their house and is about to kill a family member they will just stand there. I doubt it.

      • Well, you know how left/libtards enjoy being generous at other people’s expense… some may like how that shows their commitment.

  5. Anon, they certainly are generous with other peoples stuff.
