A Tale of Two Black Americas

Yesterday, there was a near-riot in Atlanta, Georgia, when 30,000 people stood in long lines in the sun in 90+ degrees heat, just for a chance to obtain an application form for a Section 8 public housing voucher. Some had waited in line for two days for the applications.

Police were in riot gear. People collapsed in the heat. Emergency personnel drove up in a pickup truck and handed out bottled water. People were carried off on stretchers. 62 were treated for heat-related issues; 20 were taken to hospitals, including a baby who went into a seizure.

The Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher program is a government subsidized housing assistance program for a low income family or individual. The tenant pays about 30% of their monthly income for rent. Section 8 (i.e., taxpayers) pays for (subsidize) the rest.

As you saw in the news video, the vast majority of the crowd were black Americans. 93% of black voters had voted for Obama in 2008.

Meanwhile, Michelle Antoinette Obama was living it up in the seaside resort town of Marbella, Spain:

She flew on Air Force Two (cost to taxpayers: $147,563) and was accompanied by 40 “friends” and 68 “security agents,” who commandeered 60 rooms in the 5-star hotel, Villa Padierna, where rooms go for as much as $6,500 a night.

And disgraced but shameless Congressman Charles Rangel, with 13 ethics charges by the House ethics committee, whooped it up with a who’s who of Demonrat officials to celebrate his 80th birthday last night. Rangel reportedly left the stage “dancing,” saying “This damn sure ain’t no funeral, is it?”

Let them eat cake!

  1. The thing, to me, that was the most disgraceful and pitiful about the crowds waiting for these Section 8 Handouts is that they were vouchers for rents 2 years from now, not to bail someone out who couldn’t pay THIS month’s rent!

So these are people who EXPECT to be unable to take care of themselves in 2 years, that is a terrible lack of self confidence and a LOT of hopelessness!

This economy has really hit the children’s book and commercial illustration world’s hard and my own income has definitely seen a downturn in both budgets and great projects….but I would be beyond embarrassed to be in that crowd, regardless of the amount of melanin in my skin.
Every morning I awake and thank God for this beautiful day that he has made and for the gift/s He has given me and KNOW that I can , with His limitless love, figure out how to make things turnaround for myself.
Where is the Faith and the Pride in ones’ own abilities necessary to make a Great Life?…..this crowd was beyond piteous.
This slavery need to end immediately and people set free .

  2. OH AFRICAN QUEEN WANNA BE, HAVE YOU NO SHAME?

  3. CBS’s Ron Pitts reported that flying over the scene, he couldn’t tell he was in America -that it looked like Uganda. Aside from the questionable racial analogy, he was pretty much on the money. I grew up in East Point, played baseball there, my uncle had a Ford Dealership there, my children, my Mother and my sisters family still live in Atl. area. I am proud of my birthplace and seeing this human suffering in my hometown hurts me. This is slavery but this time the master is black.
